Ifish State of the Union
Well, we made the move, and I am not totally satisfied with performance.
To make a very long story short, the server we had at ifish had RAID 5, and it was really good for the resource hungry UBB that we run.
Although we are well within the limits of what I purchased, it is not doing a good job of allocating files.
When you go to post, there is a wait time that was not there before. This is seen, by different users, to different degrees.
My choices are to leave it as it is, and be satisifed, which is not easy for me, as I like to have everything run really well.
Change bulletin board software to a more resource friendly (PHP) bulletin board. (Big hassle, learning curve for users, redesign of board, not my favorite choice. UBB was not really designed to handle this much traffic, I am told.)
Take up an offer from a company that normally does not do this, that would have space for us, and pay him, or--
Pay for what we really need, (Lots of $$$$) and start shopping all over again.
I was reassured that this would handle our traffic, and that it does, but not as zippy as I am willing to settle for.
I am frustrated for the day. Been up most of last night, and worked all of today trying to work out a solution.
I know that I won't be totally happy until we have this under control, and running as zippy as we used to.
What am I going to do?
Live with it for a couple days while I work on this decision, and not make any rash decisions until I've had enough rest.

Jennie, take a deep breath. Now sigh........ Another deep breath. Good. Now go get the fishing rod and head out for some springers. Springers are more fun that computers anyways.
Thanks for doing what you do here for i-fish.

<font size="2" face="verdana,arial,helvetica">Hey...that was my line <grin>!
Let it settle. Get some measurements on the performance.
On UBB not being able to handle the traffic...Yikes! If they told you that, what is their recommendation for a server to provide good performance for Ifish's level of traffic? Is it a major jump in hardware?
That's an easier temporary bullet to bite while you got to plan B.
If UBB is a bottleneck, you'd probably have to change forum software sooner or later otherwise you keep adding hardware to overcome the software problem. I think the user base is loyal enough to roll with that.
A lot of time and money making a switch though and you have to do a lot of research to make sure the new forum software can really do what you want.
You almost have to setup a shadow forum with the new software and let folks play.
Definitely look for forum software that does.
1. Threaded messages. You see an outline structure of each topic.
2. Anyone can reply to a message with a new topic which helps with thread drift.
3. If someone replies to your message in any thread, you get an email notice to respond.
Go fishing!

Re: Ifish State of the Union
Thanks.
I know that there are problems.
I will be looking into fixing them as soon as possible.
For now, I think I need a day off and some fishing.

Re: Ifish State of the Union
Hey Jennie... I'm not seeing any trouble. Either through dial-up or via cable. Seems the same to me.

Re: Ifish State of the Union
Jen,
First off let's think about how much at least 50% of the people that use this board pay for the information and comraderie they get. Zero.
Secondly, let's look at how hard you work to keep this a great source of fishing and boating information in the NW.
Add them together and if you wanted to leave it the way it is, I would completely understand.
You do so much for us, and many times I don't feel we do enough for you.
Jen, what I am trying to say is that if you are ever feeling like you want to try Columbia River fishing with my father and I, you are more than welcome.
Oh, and since the change over I am sure cost money, I will be sending you a check after payday (later this week). Of course you will need to post your address somewhere.
If I wouldn't have happened upon your post I wouldn't have noticed any slowdown. Heck, this is for fun, so what if I have to wait 4 more seconds?
Thanks for all you do Jennie!

Re: Ifish State of the Union
Jennie,
The only problem I've been having is the Picture Upload. It crashes my system every time now. Uploaded once before ok, but nothing now.
I noticed you use infopop, but is a lot different than another forum I'm on--which is MUCH easier and provides more info--(infopop powered also). Please send e-mail if you would like to visit the site.

Re: Ifish State of the Union
Hi Jen. I haven't noticed any difference in posting - seems to work great from my end - no complaints! Try to forget about it for awhile and you'll make the right decisions.
Thank you for all your hard work,
Joe

Re: Ifish State of the Union
Shhh! ... what was that?
Shhh!!! There it goes again!
splurp
splish
shush shush
I think there are steelhead sneaking past the back yard. Jennie, you haven't hooked one on a fly yet ... time to test yourself!
I do know how many hours, reletively thankless hours you put into Ifish. What began as a devotion based on the love of a sport and curiosity for learning how to develop web pages has become a consuming endeavor that brings modest rewards and limits your time on the water.
Who in the world would open a store that's open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and doesn't charge anything for what people come to the store for? It's all pretty darned amazing! Thank you, Jennie!
Shhh... there's that sound again! Jennie, that one's calling for you! Go catch it!
