Default From a drift boat w/9.9 kicker

I typically fish the S. Santiam for springers but my season is almost 2 months away for any decent fishing. I would like to take a dear old friend who lost his wife to cancer last week, out for a little theorpy. We used to fish a lot together but he's getting older (71) and can't do a lot on his own anymore. Can anyone suggest a stretch down river (Willamette or Columbia)where a 16'drift boat would be suited. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

In the Oregon City area (after the water goes down and clears a bit) you could put in at Sport Craft Marina and anchor / backtroll above the bridge in the (lakeline) hole, or below the bridge in the (Garbage hole). Prawn spinners & kwikfish both are productive here on a jumbo jet diver or with a dropper, with a long leader 5-6 ft. You could also put in at Clackamette park and fish the bulkhead below the Clackamas, or put un at Meldrum bar and do the same. If you wanted to troll herring you might put in at staff Jennings and fish the shelf under the sellwood bridge. Going further down there's alot of trolling to do with herring or prawn spinners down by St. Johns, put in at the bridge or at Freds Marina. If you wanted to drive a little ways. You could go up I-5 to Rainer and look for some of the hog lines around there. They are usually anchored with kwikfish! Hope this helps a little . Any more questions ask away! I Have a few for you about the South Santiam! Wanting to learn that river. I also have a driftboat.

I agree with Corkie Monster. Sellwood is great.
I launch my 14' Clackacraft with a 8hp kicker at Staff Jennings ramp at the base of Sellwood.

You're fishing in a matter of minutes. If you haven't fished there before just watch them for a few minutes and you'll figure it out. Trolling herring or prawns is the norm. 3 to 5 ounces of weight 12 to 18 to 24"of dropper length...right on the bottom. Nice shelf on the east half of the river.

Have fun.

Tom,

Thanks for the information. I will be doing a little more research on the areas you suggested before we go like locations and tatics. What should I be looking for in water level and where should I take the reading? I

Tom, thanks a lot for the information; it's likely we'll make a trip as soon as the water conditions are what they need to be; by the way, what should we be looking for in flow and where do you take the readings. I also appreciate the presentation tips, there's definately a difference/preference as you change from big water to stream type conditions. I would be glad to suggest some spots on the S. Santiam if you were planning a trip.
