Sounds like someone who either didn't know the law or didn't care

What a couple of morons. The net is probably still out there too - probably fishing a diver since they had so many sturgeon. Looks like another mission for the Pilar net crew! At least this one ought to be easy to pull up once it's found.

Since it was used in the commission of a crime and possibly a felony, the boat and gear should have been seized - and maybe still will.
It'd be nice to locate the perps'residence and get a picture of the boat, so that if they do keep it, we'd know what to look out for.

I am sure glad they caught the netters. I heard about it today at work and will make sure I tell the guy who turned them in that it was great that he did.

Is that all they got fined and taken away? Maybe that was there net that I read about on here about a week ago. Someone found a net on some river over in Oregon and reported it to a warden. Lets put the blame on that net to them guys to.
Well, at least they gotten

They should take them boys out into the CR, tie them in the gill net and throw'em overboard. Any man who gets loose and makes it to shore can walk from the penalties.
I'd be more than happy to be the one doing the tieing!

Re: $40,000 in fines for sturgeon gillnetting...
I am surprised that is all they got?
If I had the long arm of the law, I would take the boat, truck, gear, kitchen sink, and dogs first born. Then probably take that fine and multiply it my 10. Oh yeah, don't forget about doing some hard time. Shall we say, 15 to 20 in federal pen?

Easy fellas. Hanging is a little extreme, as is drowning them. Enforcing the fines will do more good and there may be other penalties depending on how they are charged and the mood of the judge.
I do not think either of these guys has "veto power" but they can sure spread the word in their community that the law has teeth.

Re: $40,000 in fines for sturgeon gillnetting...
More than likely these fish were not destined for their dinner table, these fish were likely headed to a "specialty store". There are numerous examples of our resources being sold in markets and delicatessen's around town. A few years ago Ohm Seafood on 76th and Powell was fined for knowingly buying and selling illegal shellfish. I recall a few months ago an article on Ifish regarding a group caught with hundreds of pounds of shellfish in Tillamook. I would be willing to bet that these also were going to a store.
Enforcing this is such a hard thing to do. I hope that Mr.Zagorodny and Mr.Kovalev are asked where their fish here headed. Just two weeks ago I stopped by the International Meat Market at Holgate and Foster to buy some beef jerky, and noticed some fish that looked identical to sturgeon on the counter that were labeled in a foreign language. I asked the lady behind the counter if they were sturgeon and she said they were a fish from Russia. I know there are sturgeon in Europe and these very well may have been from there, but who checks on these things and other game violations in stores?

Re: $40,000 in fines for sturgeon gillnetting...
Saw these guys, I think, a couple of summers ago coming into Brown's Landing with a net and a boat load of carp  . Was that illegal? I think Brown's Landing has a pay phone, and lot's of police living in the neighborhood. Is there anyway that was legal? Could have fixed them then.

Crabbait - you are (again) the voice of reason!
I thought $40,000 sounded about right for this offense. The guy I took fishing today said he saw these guys on the news and one of them mumbled something like "I pay a lot of money for fishing licenses every year - this isn't right, blah, blah, blah..." I doubt they'll get a slap on the wrist for this.

Re: $40,000 in fines for sturgeon gillnetting...
The guy on the show talking about licenses was not one of the netters. He was talking about the licenses needed to fish legally. This was used to discuss why he as well as many other people who pay for licenses are very angry about what happened.

Re: $40,000 in fines for sturgeon gillnetting...
The following is in no way meant to disparage immigrants or anything like that.
I once met a guy from one of the former Soviet block countries who wanted me to teach him how to catch a salmon. For return he said he would take me flounder fishing in WA where we can catch more than 50 fish per person. Not knowing the exact limit but thinking that was a LITTLE too high, I asked him what the limit was. He said he doesn't know the limit and said that there is no way that he would drive 150 miles to catch five or ten fish. He almost sounded incensed at my suggestion of knowing and keeping the law.
I hope no one has shown him how to fish for salmon or any other types of fish, until he learns to abide by the law. I thought about explaining the importance of keeping the law and protecting the resources for the future, but I don't think he was in the mood to listen.

Re: $40,000 in fines for sturgeon gillnetting...
I saw a group of Russians last fall that had no licenses, were snagging and had over their bag limits.
They were busted and recieved $1600 in fines.
The sad thing is they were doing it again the next day. :depressed:
I highly doubt they even paid the tickets. I wonder about ethics in these other countries when I see what the immigrants try to pull sometimes.

Re: $40,000 in fines for sturgeon gillnetting...
I hate to see the "immigrant" card played here because theres little chance it will be discussed without becomming offensive or otherwise innapropriate. It is toeing the line already.
Please remember, or know, that many immigrants view fish as precious food, worth its weight in gold and have come to this by years and years of hunting and fishing not for any sort of sporting liesure, but to survive.
I think the punishment fit the crime in this case, and that is the most important factor. It was a crime, and a crime has punishment. To impose more fines, confiscate boats and gear etc. etc. would be extreme and posibly counterproductive if these people rely on fishing for a means of survival. $40k is adequate.
