Default Smoking \'non brined\' fish

Do any of you folks have experience smoking fish without first putthing them through some type of brine? I was thinking of just putting a few spices on top and sticking it into the smoker without any heavy dry brine or soaking it for hours. I realize that the salt is supposed to act as a preservative, but I got a freezer I can store it in

??

This sounds like the Native American style of smoking fish. I tryed it once, but tasted bland to me. A bit like fishy smokey meat.

My favorite smoke method is to roll the fish in table grade rock salt. The hardest part is then picking off all the salt I can see. On to the smoker, and ummmmm. Billy

It would spoil faster without a brine
