Re: 12-16-03 Catch (pic)
Nice fish!!! I got three yesterday, one kind of dark buck, let him go, one pretty nice bright buck (smoker worthy) took him home , one chrome (lots of sea lice) hen, native, did the obvious, and lost a chrome steelie about 80 foot down from me that probably went 15.

I will tell you what. If you hit all of the major rivers on the coast you will find the ghostly torpedos.

I hope the flack that people sometimes get about keeping zipperlip spots a secret hasn't made people gunshy about at least mentioning rivers.

Re: 12-16-03 Catch (pic)
West Linn Wader,
Seems like even mentioning a river anymore makes the flack come even off line. I think the important part is to share pictures and I will say it again. "If you hit the coast rivers your will find fish" All you have to do is read this board. I have seen the river I catch a lot of steelhead on mentioned several times. Go try them.

Re: 12-16-03 Catch (pic)
DS,
I'm actually not looking for reports right now - I was just commenting that (IMHO) iFish would not be the same if people didn't share the info they do.
Your exactly right, "all you have to do is read this board." You know why? Because people are willing to share info. If you feel uncomfortable doing so that's cool....I'm just saying that I hope all the great info people do share doesn't stop just because of a few whiners.
The day we all refrain from sharing at least a little detail is the day iFish jumps the shark.

Re: 12-16-03 Catch (pic)
This is an interesting subject. I can only thing of three reasons for posting a photo of a chrome fish.
One --- To let Ifishers know that the fish are there and they oughta go get some.
Two --- To brag. :depressed:
Three --- To see a photo of a pretty fish.
I would hope that posters provide at least some useful information. To name a river seems reasonable.

Re: 12-16-03 Catch (pic)
Thanks for the picture!!
Just sharing the picture and date caught is ALL I need to locate winter steelhead. For those who require more info than this, here's a little tip.
Invest yourself in a self study course. Study river levels and relate this to water conditions along the entire lenght of each river you intend to fish. To accomplish this, record the current river levels and take a drive to your favorite locations and new locations you intend to fish. Keep a log or make mental notes on color, current speed and such.........in other words, does it look fishable. And be sure to look for people with fish.
Next, study catch statistics and hatchery returns.
Now combine this new found knowledge along with current weather conditions into a game plan. Now you'll be well prepared to locate the elusive winter steelhead.
Just 1 more tip, fishing for steelhead is ALWAYS better whith the water heights dropping.
Again, nice picture.........thanks,
Gregg

Re: 12-16-03 Catch (pic)
It is interesting. I can assure you that I post because people like to see fish. When it comes to rivers and spots, depending on what river it is and how much bank access there is to fish, I keep my mouth shut.
I can tell you that I use a single red, pink, pink pearl, pink clown, tiny red spin-n-glo, pink and white birdie, orange and white birdie's and all with a 1/0 eagle claw hook. They are cheap, they work, and they work on my budget. I use a 9' 8-12, 8'6" 8-17, and a 9' 10-17 which are rods I built myself. I use Maxima Ivory, again because it works and it fits my pocket book. 12 pound main line and 10 pound leaders. I have never had a problem with any of it and it catched fish.
I do not use scent because it does not seem to catch more fish for me on steelhead. For me with winter steelhead like I said "just a plain corkie and what I mentioned above gets fish.
I have a friend who helped me out a lot. I also spent a lot of time on the Sandy river in my rubber hip waders with hardly any knowledge at all. People helped me and talked to me.
I aslo picked up Bill Herzogs book on frift fishing and studied it. I learned alot from it and started catching fish. Again, with a lot of help from friends and putting time on the river.
I learned how to build rods by screwing a couple up and reading a simple rod making book. I talked to rod builders and eventually learned how to put a good product out for other people and myself.
There are a few people that may get upset if I reveal the spot or advertise the river. I have to respect that as well. Unfortinantley fishing can be a selfish thing. I see it all the time.
My ending advice. GO! to the river and ask questions and watch. Some people are not friendly, however if you walk up to me and other guys I know they would be more than willing to help you out. There are good ones and bad ones on the bank.

Hookset,
Even with all your knowledge and data, I'd be willing to bet that you read (with great interest) all the posts that indicate *in general* where fish are being caught.

Oh you know it  , however most of the areas I know and fish are from fishing in the past and know the general time frames.

Re: 12-16-03 Catch (pic)
I too have been flamed by ifish posters AND flaming email for one post I made in the not to far distant past.
Truthfully, I have fished 3 rivers this December:
1. The Willaslamish
2. The Little North/South Fork
3. The Big Clackacarrot
4. Actually four, the Whinnybaby. Watch out for the whiners on this river.
SKP

Re: 12-16-03 Catch (pic)
the wilson must be hot! I heard of sixty boat trailers at mills bridge this morning. Let's see..
Two-three guys per boat, thats 240-360 steelhead if everyone limited today. Add that to 90 days of fishing and you get (21,600)-(32,400) fish that could be harvested this year.
Look at the projected run size of 2500-4000 adult steelhead returning and you have way too many fishermen for the fish.
You wonder why people don't tell what river they fish. It's pretty simple to see why, just look at mills parking lot today!

Re: 12-16-03 Catch (pic)
Dave,
Nice lookin fish.... I bet it taste great as well. I need to get a couple for myself before the year ends  , Christmas Eve, hopefully.
I think that all that matters about the rivers is that fish swim in them. And if you know how to fish it, go for it.....

Re: 12-16-03 Catch (pic)
I think that it's important to keep quiet about certain rivers. Some just have way too much presure on them for thier size/access. Some places don't really matter though. I pretty much leave it up to the individual. If they wanna share, cool! If not, that's good too. Nice fish either way!

Re: 12-16-03 Catch (pic)
West Linn Wader,
Your probably correct, I admit it, since I like to fish, therefore I like to read about fishing. Otherwise, I'd likely be somewhere else then here on IFish.
Except, when I do read a hot report, I likely do things a little different then the rest. By fishing somewhere else. I'd rather make my own sucess with fewer people around.
It's funny how some people get so terratorial or glued to certain locations and fail to realize that other locations can produce just as well if not better. I can't remember ever seeing or reading how crowded conditons makes the fishing better.
Several years ago I was drifting the Nestucca and had to sit back and watch the parade of boats taking turns plugging the same section of water. There were 3 boats in a row plugging the same water, 2 more waiting off to the side for their turn and another boat that just completed the run was rowing back up to join in again. Simply amazing.....6 boats all working the same water to a froth. May not seem like a big deal today but 20 or so years ago it was.
Maybe this is why some older fisherman I knew don't fish anymore. So anyway, if someone likes to post pictures of their fish and keeps the location quiet, I can respect that. More power to you!!
best of luck,
Gregg
