Default Anyone used A Briggs & Stratton Outboard

I am looking for a small outboard for my 12' Mirro Craft Duck boat and in my perusals on the web I ran across Brigg's new 5 hp. short shaft. I was wondering if anyone has ever used one of these. I know the motor would probably run forever but how is the rest of the motor. If they are any good they would be worth buying. They run about 1/2 or less compared to buying a 5 hp from one of the big boys.

Just wondering?

I had a 3.5hp Briggs Shrimp puller motor and forgot to wash it off after a shrimping trip. Well imagine the surprise when I pulled the cord the following year, the motor litterly fell apart from rust.

I would keep the motors out of the Salt.

Been looking at one myself. Was told they arent as quiet as a Honda, etc but since they are 4 stroke are quieter than 2 strokes. Havnt heard one run myself though. $700 or so for a brand new kicker motor is pretty tempting.

FishOrDie----
Did you notice how they compare in weight to the "big boys"?

I checked out the Briggs website, the Briggs motor is 74 lbs Vs. 61 for Honda. so it doesn't compare there. from what I have seen the main edge is in the price. and they even have a camo edition that would look real nice on my duck boat.
The website says it is only for use in freshwater kind of puts up a red flag since I duck hunt on some of the coastal estuaries but I think I should locate a local dealer and see what they are all about. I don't think you can get any other new motor for the price.

They actually made one????? Well, I guess I actually had one then. But this was an older kicker. No markings, and no true cowling over the engine. But was a briggs and stratton motor sitting on top with a makeshift permanent cover over just part of the motor. It worked fine for me. Was a pain sometimes to start. Just make sure winterize it well. Dump gas, etc. This had an internal tank. Was pretty much a gas lawnmower engine on top of an outboard frame. Never ripped mine apart, but wouldn't doubt I could unbolt and put on my lawnmower. lol. But, mine ran fine. Wasn't the best in the world (had a TINY prop for an 8hp), but did the job I wanted it to.
