Default Siuslaw Steelies

The Siuslaw should be having fish show up around Whitaker Creek.. The NW Steelheaders have been doing some incredible work with this fishery. The inside scoop is that this year is expected to be red hot with a lot of 3 salts coming back in!! The Letz Creek Hatchery is working due to their long hours and hard work!! Support your local chapters, volunteer.

What type of work is there to do and how does one go about volunteering?

Hey TheSteelheader, are there any good bank spots around Whitaker Creek?

hey there sir fishalot there is a ton of bank access right at whitieker creek itself just cross the bridge and walk thru the camp grounds it gives you access to the bank for several hundred yards. be prepared to fish elbow to elbow though. odfw in their efforts to boost returns is dumping all the smolts for the river right into the creek so that makes all the fish keg up right below the mouth of it and puts all the angeling pressure in the mile below the creek it one day year before last I drove down the road and counted 30 boats that I could see and thats just the river thats visable I didnt even begain to try and count the bankies its a zoo most of the time up there.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">Well, actually the smolts are planted there in an effort to maximize catch AND minimize hatchery fish from heading on upstream and spawning with wild fish or spawning in competition for space with wild fish. You're right about the crowds...when the fish are in, it isn't exactly a "Wilderness" experience.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">The Eugene chapter of NW Steelheaders is the primary group that does volunteer work on the upper Siuslaw...Contact Cindy Heller (in the phone book, Junction City number I think) to find out details. They will welcome your assistance.
