Re: Deschutes walkin and bike fees too.
I am with you Bounty Hunter. I am dead set against the fees that they are trying to charge. I refuse to pay them. If I stay in a formal camp ground I pay the fee, but if I am on a trail or off the beaten path, I flat out refuse. That is why we pay taxes. We already own the land and the places I go I am unable to see any improvement. In fact I almost always have to clean my campsites when I get there and then pack it out and dispose of it myself. Any way, my .02

Re: Deschutes walkin and bike fees too.
Maybe the river and the trails will be a little cleaner now. Not that the fee's will include cleanup but the folks that take no pride when they leave their trash behind will be deterred from the Deschutes now. All you have to do is look at the Clack, Sandy and many other rivers that have an unacceptable amount of trash lining the bank and on the river bottom.

Re: Deschutes walkin and bike fees too.
I'm all for the charge for hikers, bikers, and horse riders on the Deschutes. It always made me a little mad when I would drive the boat up the river and have to pay a fee and then have a hiker or bike rider not pay. Its about time and I think its fair.
Glad to see a user fee on the big "D" for everyone.

Re: Deschutes walkin and bike fees too.
This is where it backfires on ya. Since the hikers, bikers and horseback riders are paying, they feel they should own the place. Why should boaters and fishermen ruin their experience.
It can signify the beginning of the end of boats.
Anyone remember the public meetings over Sauvie Is. refuge.

$6 a pop to walk in? I don`t think so.....and I don`t think this is even going to pass at all. CARVER....made you mad to see a biker or hiker up there huh? well , not everyone can afford to get a jet boat ....but if it makes you feel better that I pay......

dampainter, I would'nt bet on that one. They are going to do it without any input from any of the user group.

just wait till somebody figures out how to measure the amount of air your lungs consume on a dailey basis.. they'll send you a bill at the end of the month for $2 per litter.

Re: Deschutes walkin and bike fees too.
I'll have to back Rob on this as a person that utilizes the lower river trail from the mouth up. For as much as I use it (4 or 5 times a year, hopefully more in the years to come) to me it seems worth it. Currently, I believe 'Friends of the Deschutes' performs all of the upkeep on this access road (graveling, leveling, maintaining washout areas, etc.). I'm certainly not a yuppie, but I sure don't mind paying all of $6 a day 4 or 5 times a year to fish all of the productive water that's available. If you figure what it would cost you to tote a boat up there and pay for the gas, launching fee/day use, etc. the bank angler has it made. I'm amazed more rivers haven't been subject to this.

Re: Deschutes walkin and bike fees too.
Yikes! And the Bushies complain about taxes on dividends as 'double taxation' - at least with dividends there's a positive income stream to the taxpayer.
The one quoted dude in the article says hikers/bikers don't pay enough - EXCUSE ME. I've got my completed IRS Form1040 here, and I do beg to differ!!!
To me that tax return is my pass - I've paid my dues.
The real solution is to get our NW delegation to appropriate a fair amount to supporting recreational infrastructure. Otherwise, you're going to be nickel and dimed every time you step out of the car; and with it will come privatization of outdoor recreation on public lands.
If we can give the nation of Turkey, as proposed, about $20-BILLION in taxpayer money to buy Bush & Co. an 'access pass' over there, I do believe we can surely afford to spend a few million right here in the Northwest to preserve public access to public lands.

Re: Deschutes walkin and bike fees too.
I don't like it. I've done both and agree with the current system. This is akin to the Northwest Forest Pass where they stick the yuppee hikers on the popular trails. It doesn't affect me because I am looking for offbeat places to hunt, but I don't agree to that either. Paying for use of public lands?
I feel we already pay for these uses with our tax dollars.
My #1 reason for hating this and the Northwest Forest pass is you are going to keep the low income out of the woods. How can a family of 5 afford to go for a hike at $6 a head?
I can see jet boating as a have vs. have not activity, but this is rediculous.

Re: Deschutes walkin and bike fees too.
I have a client who is a semi-retired PORTLAND SCHOOL TEACHER! She boastfully acknowledged she is recieving TWO CHECKS FROM PERS per month!!!
What?? Hello, anybody home? And then the Common TV news joyfully parades these horror stories of children going with out proper education and threats of closures???
Good gawd!?! Am I the only one whom has noticed wasteful gov't spending & PERS abuse being reported on page 7 of the Oregonian, while threats of school closure loudly blaring on the cover?
HELLO??? Is anyone awake at the wheel?
$6 a head to hike & wade fish??? Oh good grief...More Volvos & Saabs parked along the Deschutes featuring expensive outfit wearing knuckleheads???
I hope not!

Re: Deschutes walkin and bike fees too.
According to the article, "with a 50 percent compliance rate, officials would likely collect about $7,500 that year, meaning the program would lose about $14,700. "
So with most of you complaining about having to pay for this, it looks like they've already figured you in. What's your worry?!

Re: Deschutes walkin and bike fees too.
Ok, I have to agree that this is a bunch of hogwash . I don't think it was right for the boaters to have to pay and its deffinatly not right for the hikers to have to pay either. Now I could take this several different ways as to why I oppose these charges but I won't. I just wonder why 1/4 of my paycheck is gone and I still have to pay to go fishing on a public river.
