Siletz Report?
Has anyone been fishing the Siletz lately... should start warming up real soon. Usually late December is good... I have some friends that have been trying to get some accurate info. Please let me know. I have the need to fish!

Re: Siletz Report?
No one is responding so that must mean you should get out there immediately. I see you are from Eugene like myself. You could always try the Siuslaw since it is much closer.

Re: Siletz Report?
No report due to no one fishing it. The river is blown out.

Re: Siletz Report?
Not getting off work until 3 a.m. yesterday morning put the hurt on my plans to float it. My electric blanket kept wispering in my ear "stay here, I'll keep you warm..." I haven't heard a reliable report yet either. I too, am chomping at the bit to hit it...
Ask Grant...

Be glad you got off work late, you wouldn't have liked the float much

Salmonator,
Does that mean you cleaned house out there today  , or does it mean some stretches of water raised the pucker factor a little?

Re: Siletz Report?
River is still high, and there is a pile of snow up the hill towards gravel creek which will keep it that way for a while.
Still a little early yet in my estimation.
I did find some fish on a river south of there though.

Re: Siletz Report?
I managed an early broodstock on the Siletz on December 18th. Today was a different story, like what the others have said fish are easily findable in a river not too far south...

Re: Siletz Report?
yes, we have brought home many fish from "that river" but the crowds this past weekend burnt me out on having to put up with that crazy zoo 16 cars just at the bridge hole??? I'll keep waiting for the siletz, and until then, fish for sturg. in the slough! Wow, looked like 'free fishing weekend' out there...waaaaaaaaay to many people.

Twitch, one thing I have come to accept as far as "that river" goes, is that you must enjoy the drive over. Finding a place to fish is just a bonus

Re: Siletz Report?
Unfortunately " That River" is the easiest one to get to after class and still have some daylight left to work with.
Oh well, That is life.

Re: Siletz Report?
Dave/BGF2,
Thanks for the info. Question, though...
When you say "lower deadline" do you mean the salmon deadline @ Buck Cr, or THE deadline below the falls? Your wording seems to imply an "upper" deadline, only I dunno what that would be now that everything's closed above the falls. Maybe i'm just misunderstanding.
BTW, I haven't been up there yet this season, but last season I got a broodstock keeper above Moonshine just after Christmas and a big native right around this same time in January. Used to fish it more often when I lived in Salem (especially in the summer), but it's a bit far from Eugene.

Re: Siletz Report?
As far as the lower deadline goes. It's the one below the falls. Great hole for the big boys when they are in. Best day I had on the river was 5 yrs ago. That's when I caught that big native. I hooked 16 fish and landed 10 in three hrs. As gos as my witness, this is true. The 2 guys that weren't doing so good were right there watching. Ahhhh, the joy of a bluefox spinner. #5 silver/silver. Had 8 when I hit the hole, left with 1. The last fish that I lost, we (those guys and I), think the fish would have gone over 25lbs. It was huge and chrome. Made a dash to the boulder off shore and stupid me thumbed the spool. As any good fisherman knows, BIG no-no. When my line broke, it sounded like a .22 going off. Still my favorite hole though. Love to fish it, hate to hike it.

Re: Siletz Report?
Just to put the information out there, there are two deadlines on the Siletz:
One is for salmon angling and begins at Buck Creek. The river is closed from Buck Creek and above for salmon angling/retention. The "real" deadline is at the 64.5 river mile marker, and this is where the river becomes closed to all angling, year round, for river mile 64.5 and above, and all tributaries along the entire stream.

Re: Siletz Report?
My bad, I guess I've never thought of Buck Creek as a "deadline". I just knew from there on upstream you can't keep Salmon. The only places I've know as the deadline holes were above and below the falls, until they closed the upper river.

Re: Siletz Report?
I think it's the most beautiful river in Oregon, especially above the deadline. It's just something else.....(I'm going to my happy place, now...:-))

Re: Siletz Report?
Sparkleboy---Ya need to get out a bit more. I grew up over there and have seen what else is out there. Definitely "very cool" up there, but not completely the Happy place. Should take a look at the Santiams, Thomas creek, Mckenzie, Big Elk, Alsea, Little north fork Santiam. Awesome places to visit, overwhelming in appearance, and spectacular to FISH!!!!! Happy fishn"

Re: Siletz Report?
Iwan-
It just has a special place in my heart. I've been to and fished all of those streams but Thomas creek. The Siletz just has some special meaning to me.
You forgot the North Umpqua and Kilchis...
One other thing...not everyone's happy place is the same. It is very obvious yours and mine are not the same.

Ihave fished the Siletz since 1970....there are many beautiful places to fish in this great state, but none more grand than the Siletz.

Re: Siletz Report?
Hey everyone. I am new to Ifish, but so far what I have been seeing is great stuff. I wish I would have liked to know about this site sooner. I couldn't help saying something on the Siletz. I have made 3 trips so far this seaon (all in Dec.). I brought home 5 fish. All were around 8-10lbs. I have fished this river for almost 14 yrs. I am 35 and live in Salem. Although I haven't drifted it in a boat, I have fished it from Moonshine on up, clear to the lower deadline. Of the five steelies, that I took, 3 were summer fish believe it or not. Still alot of fun though. My favorite time to fish it for trophy fish is late Feb. through the middle of March. My biggest native to date is 22 lbs. I caught it at the lower deadline hole, right behind a couple of gents that didn't do to well. If this weahter holds, I plan on being up there somewhere on Sat. My name is Dave, by the way. Hope to read more stories and share some trade secrets.
