Default A Weekend CR Sturg Report (pic)

Wow what a wet day on Saturday. It was so wet and rainy I think I should say it again...

Wow what a wet day on Saturday... but the fishing was AWESOME!

XTC decided to head out on the water with Cracker Joe and I to warm up for the Sturg Challenge. Now XTC has not been fishing in over a month so he was a little out of sinc... let's see what do you think he forgot?

A) Coat
B) Rain gear
C) Boots
D) Same darn sweatshirt he has worn fishing the other 1,000,001 times he has gone fishing.
E) All of the above

If you guessed E you're right! Does he look a little wet & cold?

Wet & cold... Nah, we stayed warm reeling in 23 metric tons of sturgeon (exageration but it seemed like that much!)

We used 151 baits and caught fish on all but 4! The sturgeon were just hammering the bait... not that lite little tap... tap... tap but more like a thump... thud... WHAM! We ended the day with 14 keepers, most on the smallish side probably 42"-45" and numerous 36"-40" fish. I did hook one that just turned his head and headed down river, felt like a horse then came off I feel like I lifted weights all weekend!

Highlight of the day for me had to be when Chris was sitting in the cabin next to the heater trying to warm up... his pole was just getting hammered and he would not get up to set the hook so I ran out there and set it for him, before he could get the words "You set it, you reel it in" out of his mouth my rod pounded down and I set the hook with my free hand! A rod in each hand with a fish on the end of each! Ya gotta love those sturg!

We fished the St. Helens area in about 50' of water. The fish are really starting to stage for the smelt... fishing should just be getting better and better as we move through the rest of this month into next month!

OMAGOSH! I gotta go fishin'! It's reports like that that make me want to be unemployed for about 2 months or so.

Nice Pic/post. Nothing like a day on the river catching fish, after fish, after fish, after...........

Can't wait till Christmas week. My biz slows to dead crawl. I'm not so sad about that.

Yep you guys should go. Most of the fish we caught were very fresh and sharp, as you can see from the picture! They really have a lot of fight in them, even the little ones. By the end of the day I was just wishing the bait would run out because I could hardly reel another one in!

we were also in the St Helens area saturday, about 2pm, till after the xmas ships went by.

we only managed one keeper sized...but a ton of shakers....didn't bring enough bait, that's for sure...what a blast!

we were in the 33ft chris craft, red bimini..

Awesome! I Remember my Dad making smoked sturgeon when I was a kid. It was incredible. I'm going to have to learn more about this sturgeon fishing thing. If the wife and kids like smoked sturgeon I'll be 'In like Flynn'

Took us a bit to find fish around Kelly Point Saturday but when we did we had a blast. I took my 4 year old boy Daylin out for his first real try at sturgeon fishing. He had a blast! Even with the rain pounding down on him he got excited with every fish that came to the boat. He's a trooper for sure.

Spooled joined us Saturday for the fun and we boated about 25 fish for a slow day in that area. Pop's was the only one to boat a keeper that day of 48 inches Other than that the keepers have seemed to disappeared from the area.

Good job Shane.

147 fish, 14 keepers is impressive. Glad you had a heater for the kid.

Well the good news is that XTC isn't dead, as I'd feared that he may have been. Funny part is, that's the first time I've seen a picture of him not wearing his santa cruz sw and orange rain pants, tough break. Forgot to mention, I spotted the Carrot Clan at the Christmas party, didn't get a chance to say hi... but Chris, you look a little short for being a proverbial fishing God... Way to go guys, see you on the water.
