Default Story Time

Well, well, I began chasing the elusive Steely about 6 years ago. I needed something to fish for when the smallmouth/largemouth weren't biting. Decided that my little brother and I would give it a shot. Lived in Tri-Cities at the time so that meant "bobber" fishing the snake was our best option. We were very excited on our first outing; we could not wait until one of us hooked into one of these fish. Of course, first trip out = no fish or take downs for that matter. The initial trip was in January and the number of trips taken kept increasing while the number of fish didn't. One morning before work(late February), I decided to go out alone for a couple of hours. Got on the water around 7am (of course it was in the low 30s). Wasn't there for more than 15 minutes and then it happened, a take down (our second total take down in at least 15 trips) I was hooked up to my first steelhead. It didn't put up an incredible fight, but it turned out to be a 5lb native hen, what an exciting event. Haven't fished for warmwater fish much since.

Hey congratulations and welcome to Ifish. I've got several steelhead, but am yet looking for my first bobber and jig fish.

Used to do some bobber and jig that way myself..always found November to be pretty hot and the week of thanksgiving I landed 11 for 4 trips all clipped. Keep at it they will come!!
Best jigs color was red/black 3/8oz. fished 8' below sliding bobber, tipped with a cooked prawn tail(natural undyed) rigged threaded with small end of tail hanging down.

Welcome aboard
NMBRCNCHR..?? Whats it stand for?

Number Cruncher it is. As for the technique I was using way back when, it is very popular on the Snake and Columbia rivers near Tri-Cities. Large jig tipped w/whole shrimp under a bobber (not float). Over the past several years I have picked up drift fishing and now I predominately float fish. Much more effective at presenting bait where the fish are. Much thanks to some buddies of mine for showing me the float fishing ropes, I will rarely drift fish anymore.
