Default camping question (mouth of the john day)

I am looking for help, anybody know the name of the campground at the mouth of the John Day river? I've searched state/federal park web sites without any luck! my alumaweld "the chumbucket", and the rest of the family would greatly apreciate any help.

Le Page Park, I think the Corps of Engineers runs it.

CAUTION when camping at this park we had a cooler stolen from our camp. Park ranger tells me this happens often because of people hiking the railroad tracks

There is another park up river a few miles. It is like an oasis with facilities! I do not know specifics but this is in the middle of small mouth country.

The steelhead generally do not arrive until October. Smallmouth and Channel Catfish fishing can be good as early as mid March.

There is a park that you can boat up to and camp aproximately 6 miles up from LePage. It is called Philipi Park. If you take your boat up further than Philipi, be very careful of SHALLOW mud flats. I am not saying don't go up there. But if you do, watch your depth finder and when it starts getting under 10 feet go real slow.

And if you go to Philipi, make sure you have a tarp for ground cover under your tent.

There's hundreds of geese up there, and millions of little landmines!

Watch for the rattlesnakes! They kill quite a few of them in both parks every year.

Regarding phillipi park, this warning from personal experience!!! Note where you want to set a tent. This is a sprinklered park with some fairly strong pressure. Late on evening we inadvertently set our tent over a recessed sprinkler head. About 2 A.M. said head commenced to perform it's intended function, causing a bit of disturbence to the inhabitants of the afore mentioned tent.

Chummer

Can you drive to philipi? Is there a put in for a drift boat? What I'm wondering is if a guy could set up camp at Philipi and drift to Le page then shuttle himself back?

Or maybe better yet, what is a good drift to float and fish if you only had a 3 day weekend and took camping gear along in your boat? I'm thinking of going in April sometime with my driftboat.

Hack2ee, sorry to jump in on your thread but I didn't want to start a new one and I think your question has already been answered.

Thanks

Both Campgrounds a great!! for the last 3 years my father-in-law and my 6 year old daughter stay on the river or the upper park to catfish at night and bass fish during the day!!

I do have to say that I got my Warn Winch stolen right off my bumper the first year we stayed over the weekend. It was parked right in the main boat launch parking lot. It was early April and nobody was around.

Good luck and keep your stuff locked down!!
