There are still a few bright chinooks in that river to be had. And that hole has as many as any of them. They do raise steelhead at the trask hachery, they are wilson broodstock fish however.

LUnd,

They may raise em there..... but I dont think they release any hatchery fish into the trask anyore period. The last 3 years, i have not touched a hatchery clipped fish. There is still fished to be had, just not to be cooked.........

blacktail,
You don't fish it enough if you are not catching any hachery steelies in there. They dont plant any steel in it, but all the broodstock wilson fish are raised and inprinted with trask water. And when they spawn the adults, they just put them back into the trask river instead of trucking them to the wilson.

they may take the steelhead to the wilson for a week to acclimate to the pond area? before release.

I've caught lots of stray hachery fish on the trask in the last five years. more now than 5 years ago.

Lund,
Wasnt trying to offend you by any means. I was just stating my experiences on the river. And I have fished it many many times, and yet to land a hatchery fish...... My bad luck i guess... I was under the impression that they no longer released clipped winter steelies any more . My bad. If Your right.......????

I wouldn't say you have bad luck blacktail, in my opinion I would much rather catch a 15+ pound native and watch it swim back into the river to complete it's spawning mission than get a dinky little 8 pounder only to bring it home and throw it on the bbq. As for the hatchery, closing these facilities should be a crime. If providing a decent meal and nice place to stay for inmates is more important then helping "maintain" not only our fish runs, but all things natural, then I just assume skip paying state income taxes and invest what cut they would be getting directly into non-profit organizations out there to help us achieve something much better for our future as humans.
