Default Steelhead bycatch may kill tangle net usage i

Just saw this article today in Seafood.com. forgive me if it is a repeat posting of the article....but we must get the word out there!

I really must give credit to Scott Amerman for being on this soapbox much longer and louder than I have. Here is the link:

Watch the steelhead counts at Willamette falls when the nets go in. The significant drop in the numbers of fish passing over the falls speaks loud about how many steelhead the gill netters kill.

Just a little more confirmation on a subject we all know to be true, even the gill netters.

They won’t admit it though because they are still trying to make money the easy way.
Laziness!

By killing everything in the river, rather then targeting the proper fish, they make sure they don’t miss a single fish.
Greed!

How many more sins against nature do we have to see before we call a foul?

Denial is just a river in Egypt that the gill netters will try to kill next.

They estimate that 165 wild steelhead will be killed during the initial season they have set. They also mention that they are going back to 8 inch mesh because most steelhead pass through it.

Too bad nobody put 2 and 2 together in this article and explained that everyone one of those 165 steelhead will be the largest of the steelhead returning. So, their whole theory of only 2% of the run being caught may hold true, but it could also be 50 % of the trophy sized fish returning.

And we wonder where all the 20lb. steelhead have disappeared to.....
