Springer Question?
I like to go on the water prepared. Last spring I was wrapping kwik fish the night before the trip. What is the best way to keep your baits fresh after pre-tieing them on the plugs? Also, is it a good idea to keep pre-fileted sardine chucks ready or should you trim them up just before they go in the water?.
Thanks

Re: Springer Question?
I really dont like putting them on the night before because I have a problem with the plugs getting all tangled up, but I do cut my wraps ahead of time... a bag K-16 and a bag for K-15 and soak them in sardine or anchovie scent the night before. Just keep them in the fridge and into a bait cooler with ice the next morning.

Re: Springer Question?
You can pre-wrap the night before and freeze them. You can do the same with just the fillet. I prefer to cut the fillets on the spot and docter them up on the boat but thats just me.

Re: Springer Question?
I went down to the Longveiw area last year for the first time fishing for springers. It was the end of March. We never wrapped our kwickfish with anything. My girlfriend and I caught 5 fish in two days and all we used was agood herring gel scent. In the area where we were fishing there were about 20 boats both days and we caught more fish than any of the other boats who were all wrapping their kwickfish. A fluke maybe, but I will never wrap another kwickfish ever.

Re: Springer Question?
A fluke it may have been....
There is nothing better than real bait fillets for a natural presentation.

Re: Springer Question?
I don't like to pre-wrap the nite before because the salt in my secret sardine cure rusts the hooks. Like 5-cents, I filet and trim a few sardines and add cure and scent to them in a ziplock ahead of time.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">Um, I'm just a beginner at these things, but could you walk me through how there is anything that you can do to make a kwikfish 'natural' looking? I'm not sure I've ever seen the color chartreuse in real life, at least, not when I was sober...
Wrapping them may not be required, but it certainly doesn't hurt. I wrap them, and do some things to my fillets before I do so to make them taste extra good. Maybe it isn't necessary, but I think I get more fish than the guys in the boats next to me. They think so, too.

Re: Springer Question?
 And so it starts. Springer questions in the middle of December. So, next I expect you will be under the Sellwood Br. as soon the water clears. All I can say is, if you'll be there on Wednesday then I'm going on Tuesday. SPRINGER FEVER BABY!!! I'm ready.

Re: Springer Question?
I just cut the bait to size. Then wrap the plugs in the morning. The key is to keep the bait cool. When the bait is in good shape it will be firm. If the wraps get warm they start to spoil. Salmon like fresh food.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">I wrap my Kwikfish the night before and keep them in plastic boxes with dividers. I then freeze them. I learned this from one of Clancy Holts guides while fishy the Newhalem.
I to have to agree with the comment about it not always being neccessary to wrap your Kwikfish. Our family has a cabin on the Kenai in Alaska and I wrap my Kwikfish the same as I do at home. My Dads partner uses Smelly Jelly on his and he kicks my butt every year. I just feel better using real bait. Goes to show ya.

Re: Springer Question?
In Scott Haugen's egg curing book he list at the end of the book and quick sardine wrap cure. Done it a couple of times, makes them last longer and much easier to work with when wrapping them on, also if I don't use them I freeze it wrapped for next time. Works for me.

Re: Springer Question?
Personally, the time you save cutting the night before is not necessary. If you have at least two good kfish per rod, you can do it on the water and keep the sardine frozen on ice the whole time. Get out early and wrap up the plugs you are going to fish first, put them in the water. Every half-hour to hour, wrap the other kfish (while fishing), swap them out, wash it down and repeat as necessary. This works best while anchor fising. If you are going to marinate your filets (scent), cutting them the night before may make more sense.
