Default 2012 Spring bear

Whos going out the first weekend? I took a day off work the first week to get some hunting/scouting in. At close to $4 a gallon my scouting has been minimal, so I need to get as much time in as I can. I just hope the weather clears up a little bit....I know its not the best time of the season, but I know I wont kill anything if I dont try...

Lol kind of sad but I'll be out opening morning. Have a few places I know about so I haven't done much scouting either.

I'm sure I'll do some wandering...if the rain and wind ever stops here, flooding and a lot of blow down....sounds like a good time.

I probably won't be heading out until close to the end of April, unless the weather makes a sharp u-turn.

Spring bear hunting is supposed to be good weather hunting!

If the first week in April is anything like today I will cancel my time off. The area I am hunting is pretty new to me, and the maps I ordered from the BLM are all atleast 16 years old (one is from 1979) so I need to get familiar to the area. If the weather is even decent I can go check out some areas and get a better idea of where to sit later in the season. That and I am anxious.....

We went last year on opening day. Didn't see one bear. High on Saturday was 37. Reminds me of the current weather. I will be waiting until may to go.

I will be out the first sunny day I can....I found fresh tracks allready this year. Look in the right habitat and you will find them early, even before season opens, if the weather is right.

A bio told me that the vast majority of spring bears are taken in May. If you're really pressed for funds leave it until May.

I told myself that I was going to fish Springers until May. I'm starting to waffle...didn't see many bears until May last year, but oh well.

Look for warm areas with feed early in the year. They typically go hand in hand.

If the weather is good bears will be out opening day...Seen lots of bears opening weekend..Even if nothing is seen there are things to be learned while in the woods...Ridge roads to walk, grassy areas to find...Its all good and it adds up to success...

Found a ridge road a few years back with bear sign...They were coming out eating dandelions...Took a stand that evening and was only there a couple hours when he came out...

Walk and scout ridge roads...Find the sign, figure a stand and kill a bear..

This is him...

Excellent video.....awesome bear.....damn those goats are pretty cool!!

Usually I look and see 13+ minutes on amateur video and I always speed through part of it....this one was the exception. You two put together a good show and now I am ready for bear season!!

Big head, small skull...It was all meat...LOL.. I hear that is a problem with a lot of Oregon bears...I do not know why though...I measured it myself just for me so I would know...

I have seen bears from other parts of the country that scored better, but were noticebly smaller in body and head..

No matter...

This is the bear that my brother killed in the same spot the year before..Same stalk, same spot except it died on the road...LOL..

.I watched the stalk and thought that it would have been cool to video it...Thats how the idea came about to make a spring bear video...Little did I know that the stalk that I thought would have been cool to video played itself out the next year EXACTLY in the same way...

Amazing...

In this picture you can see where I shot from a year later..

That's genetics again I suppose. A bears skeleton stops growing just like ours do, regardless of the pounds we can pack on.

Nice vid's. Now I wanna go hunting with you! Ive got a SW spring tag, but my sights are not set near as high as you demonstrate. Very nice!

I've got one spot that was open last year for an active logging operation that may be closed now? Looked really good!

I know of a little skid road that is one if the earliest places I see any sign. From the amount and type of sign on that road gives me an idea as to how the season is starting out.
Im going to check it out right now. Oh wait! I have to work today.

I was thinking of sitting next to that road this spring. What do you think of that?

Need some good weather to get the grass growing,or opening weekend will be slow...

Pretty sure I know that road also, but then again,I know them all..

Old Salt,

My sights are not all that high..I killed a sow last year on the last day...I just prefer to watch them awhile, make sure there are no cubs and check for size...Most times I can find a reason not to shoot...LOL ..Probably why I see 20 to 30 bear a spring...I like to be in the woods and watching is fun...A really big one though and you know it instantly and the watching ceases..

Walk some ridge roads, find where a bear is working, which is fairly easy...Plan a ambush and just wait on him...Like I said in the video..

"They always show up"..

I have my sights on a road that the maps show as going through, but it doesnt anymore. Its on a ridge and the closed section is about 1.5 miles long. Road on both ends. It had an ominous name that probably is the reason is the reason its closed. There is even an old piece of logging equipment that rolled down the hill that was never recovered. We never walked it last year, but will this year. Its about as high as you will get in the area and lots of clear cuts.

Found a ridge road a few years back with bear sign...They were coming out eating dandelions...Took a stand that evening and was only there a couple hours when he came out...

Walk and scout ridge roads...Find the sign, figure a stand and kill a bear..

This is him...

Awesome video but I could help laugh watching those funny goats follow you while putting the sneak on the bear! Are they for meat packing or something? Or do they just dig bear hunting with you!!

They are for packing...They didn't have their packs on cause we went in figuring on spending the night...All the packs and gear were on the landing..

Those four goats packed all the meat...We had to pack the camp stuff, but it wasn't much...

They do dig hunting and make excellant companions, much like a dog...

I don't have any now though..

Nothing to do today so I put together a couple clips illustrating why it pays not to get into a hurry before shooting...

I like to watch a while...Bears are hard to judge..You get in a hurry and you end up with a dink or worse..A mama..

Cubs are not always underfoot...Relax,watch,judge and then decide...Both of these sows were as big as most boars and the cubs were not evident for a while..

Cool videos. Buddy and I will be spring bear hunting for the 1st time. We are both beargins. We bought the SW spring bear tags. We will basically hold up a map and throw a dart as to where we go.

Not sure how many times we will get out with the price of fuel, but it will be at least a full weekend and maybe a day trip or two.

Anybody in the Salem area wanting to hook up to save some on $$$???

Good luck to ya both...

Bears eat grass in April...It goes through them fast, same as cows and horses and they will leave a lot of sign...When you find a area that bears are working, hunt those bears...Don't waste time driving and looking for other areas...Stick with your spot and it will pay..

This,

equals this,

Thats how I do it...Not sure that one weekend and a couple day trips will get it done though..Best of luck..

Thanks Santiam338. We aren't going in to it totally blind thanks to a couple different folks we've met.

I'm sure if we get in a bear or two or even some real promising sign, we will keep at it tell we fill tags or the season ends. Regardless, it is a learning curve and we will put in to it all that we can.

Bill,
You have got to stop this. Your going to cause sleepless nights well before it's time. Everyone will be to sleepy and fatigued come opener.
Now I NEED to go set up a tree stand and clear some shooting lanes in the RAIN.

Current weather...they'll all be asleep for opening day. I'd look for dens. Rustle them out of bed. Reminds me of last year.
