Need to answer some basic questions. Hunt what? Traditional or modern inline? What is recreational shooting to you? Conical or PRB? Any historical interest?

Your best bet would be to visit the Grizzly Mtn. Long Rifles over in Prineville. I'm sure they would be glad to give a beginner a helping hand and advice on the traditional side of things. Hands on beats Internet advice every time.

Depends if you want a traditional or a zip gun.Good advice on Grizzly Mountain Long rifles, lots of good folks there for advice and they probably would let you shoot a few to see if you like them.

Another vote for Thompson Center NW Explorer...although the open sights provided are a bit coarse. Swapped them out with some Tru-Glo Universal fiber optic sights, which are now legal in Oregon, and have had good results.

Sportsman's' Guide carries the Knights at super low prices and some versions can be switched from percussion cap to 209 as you travel from state to state.

Traditions makes their vorteck north west edition that looks like it would be a nice one. I use a knight wolverine converted to north west legal. Deadly accurate. Im a little guy and my wolverine is made for smaller people.
