Personally thats a little heavy for me. Both the rod and reel are great. I like the 8 to 12 pound rod with the 5500.

I'm sure youv'e had a pole or two now it's time for a new ROD and REEL. Brand is really not an issue as most High end rods are made of same materials available. custom has an extra special meaning but pricey too $125 to 300. for a decent price rod many new and old names to choose from north river, Xtreme, shimano, etc $65 to 119..high end rods lami's, Gloomis, St croix, fenwick, sage? $119 to 375 etc good numbers for a steelhead drifting trigger/casting rod would be line test 8-12 in 9' length rated 3/8ths or 3/4oz lure.

Salmon of same design trigger rod/ casting 10 to 20 line test, 8'6" or 9' in length and rated 1 to 2 1/2oz lure.

My favorite id the Abu's and if your planing on long casts and fish alot of snags then a large spool might be in order 6500 for salmon $80

If you plan on steelhead drifting and bobber-jig then the 6500 will work to but for a little cheaper and a little smaller the 6000-$60 is perfect.
Just my .02 I'm sure this thread will get lots of hits, the options are endless.
Tight lines and Merry Christmas!!

If you are looking for a good steelhead rod I would go with a 8'6" - 9' 8-12 or 8-17. Look for a slae then get a Shimono Currado. YOu will love how they cast and perform.

For steelies you can't go wrong w/ a Shimano curado and a berkley buzz ramsey 8-12 (you can gett 110 yards 15lb mono on a curado, plenty for steel)

A 5500 for drift fishing would work well, and should cost you less than $70.

As far as rods go, Lamiglas makes some great rods for the rest of the $$$ you want to spend.

I also made a few casts with a TH rod today, felt pretty good too, and Trask River Tackle(Bait of Eggs on Ifish) also carries Rainshadow blanks, and turns out a very snazzy product as well.

All will work well for what you want, and all 3 are Ifish sponsors, so you can just "Click and Shop" for some pretty good prices for quality products.

<edit> an 8-12# rated rod, or 8-17# will provide good feel, and plenty of backbone to land steelies. A rod that's 8'6 or longer would also be a good choice.

Good fishing,
Chris

Where and how are you fishing? Can you cast a level wind? Do you normally use spinning outfits?
Boat? Bank?

For the money your spending, you can get a great setup with a Holiday special TH custom rod and Okuma reel. Check out the TH Holiday special page.

And provide a few more answers. Oh, the ABU 6500 is to heavy for casting all day. You need to scale that down to a 4500 or 5500. For level winds, I prefer Shimano for steelhead.

Gregg

You have the right idea. Go a little lighter on the reel, and maybe a 5500 series. Go with the berkley rod.
