Default Are fisherman superstitious?

Are fisherman like ball players? Do they go through a ritual of actions in order to better their chances? When I played ball, I would tap the dust off each shoe, then touch each corner of the plate with my bat. Do any of you do anything like this? I just thought that it might be the reason I'm not catching fish, (other than the self-fulfilling prophetcy of my name, but that is the old reverse superstition; never call yourself slugger.)

Not really...but I have noticed some strange phenomena:

Fill coffee cup, pick up donut.....fish on!

Complete rookie in the boat (especially female newbies)...huge chinook on!

Last pass.....we gotta get outa here....fish on!

Forgot the net....huge fish on!

Gotta get this birdsnest out.....bobber down!

There is no way you are going to catch any self respecting salmon with a spin'n glo, hootchie skirt, two micro corkies and a gob of phoney eggs.....fish on!

You get the picture.

I have to have my vest pocket zipped for some reason.

Have to wear the same shirt and hat.

Line guides have to be perfectly straight.

This probably means I'm normal though.

I'm not, but when it came time to name my boat, I found out my wife is. My first choice boat name was "The Doomed." My wife said she "wouldn't feel comfortable going out in a boat named The Doomed. So I ended up naming it "The Waterfish."

I dunno about that. I was on a boat called "The Lucky" and it the motor quit next to the Tillamook N Jetty. I decided that it was luckier while staying on a trailer.

You shoulda seen the look I got when I revealed a banana after we hooked a fish last Sat!

Lucky fishing shirt= Fish on the barbie tonite.

Kid or newbie=Hookup before we can explain how things are done.

Mom salmon fishing= More cohos than ever before.

The "forgotten net" scenario usually works for me.
What's up with this banana thing? Should I be aware of this? Fishing with fruits?

Great topic!
I have not seen obvious superstitious behavior such as mentioned above among fishermen but wouldn't doubt it.
What I find interesting is the behavior that is borderline superstitious. It is behavior that has a logical basis for the given action. For example, a person flyfishing may always start with a particular pattern. Logic would tell a person to match the hatch, use an attracter, etc. When asked why the person might reason" its always been a good producer for me.jWas the only thing I used for years."
Personally, My flirting with this behavior is evident by my persistence to fish a particular hole and/or stream rather than move about covering more water.(I would make a bad guide) I'm getting better at "moving " on when fishing, but still lack flexibility to try a new stream .(I need more time off to explore, an excuse the boss won't buy, I'm afraid).
Such lack of flexiblity has caused me only to recently get into jig fishing.I wish I would have earlier.

Mini-mart biscuts and gravy and a maple bar for breakfast. When I eat this the morning of fishing I rarely get skunked. Go figure.

lets see.........

I wear latex gloves always when using eggs as I am very particular when it comes to smell on the baits.

I also leave a net in the truck 90 percent of the time when steelhead fishing from the bank.

I like to fish from the back right of a boat for some reason..........

I always wear some sort of U of O clothing. I only fish in the fall with a rippin' hangover, more lack of self-control with certain pals than superstition.

I have to have a banana peel hanging over my rod and line, so I have a strike indicator. Nothing like hitting a superstition right in the face.

Never fish at 13 pulls...

Never fish in a tournament in a boat that is painted like a bananna.

In the old days - even having a woman step on a boat at the dock was considered unlucky.

I just go to have a good time and I magically hook up.

5, 6, or 8, but NEVER 7 wraps in egg loop or fisherman's knot.

Make it to Church on Sunday, and catch fish the following Saturday.

I agree with no banana thing.. throw them out of the boat as i was told by guide one time.. and my other thing is that if i almost take out a deer or elk on the way down to the coast in the early morning, it will be a good day.

Seeing wildlife driving down to the coast= fish!

I simply can't use a used leader at the beginning of fishing trip. Even if it's been cast only once and in perfect condition from the previous trip. I change all leaders for the start of the day.
