I would have to double check the regs but I am almost sure that the Big Willy is closed for retention.

I have caught a few sturgeon around Roger's Landing a few years back when I was chasing Channel Cat. There is a pretty good spot upriver from the ramp. I wouldn't eat anything that has been sucking the bottom in that stretch of river though, especially a fish that has been in the system for that long

The Willamette is OPEN for sturgeon retention ABOVE Willamette Falls.

Tacklebuster I thought above the falls was legal.

But down there if you are around enough you can see quite a few things. With little law enforcment besides in the summer I'm sure that this will not change.

I have seen some good size cats around. I would also think that cats would fall with sturgon as resident nonedible fish since they eat the same stuff.

Swam in that section of river during the summers.

Default Gators in Newberg

The other day I was down at Rodgers landing with my son. We were checking stuff out on the dock and throwing rocks and things. Just out haveing fun durring a dry time. While we were there two old timers came in from fishing. We asked if they had done any good, and one of them flopps a sturgon out on to the dock. They also had a couple of bass and a few sucker fish. I have heard of sturgon up this high but have never seen any other than in pictures. This was a nice fish looking just shy of the 60" mark. But the belly was almost brown and the barbs were all worn down smooth compared to estuary fish.

Being from the Newberg pollution pool I was wondering is there a way to cook them to get out all the nasty stuff. You know the stuff that causes only one eye or the big red soars on the fish that you sometimes see dead on the bank or floating by. Or was this just a waste of future catch and release good times? The only thing that we eat out of there is the salmon and steel head on their way up river to other systems. Maybe that isn't even a good idea but they just pass through and are not resident fish.

I just thought that this site was kind of strange,
anyone else have any thoughts on the subject. Or areas to try catch and release above the falls.

I personally would not eat ANYTHING that feeds off of the bottom in this area, salmon and steelhead ,sure, Ive heard that down around Chamopoeg Park there is a deep hole with nice sturgeon in it, havent tried it yet, maybee next year and it will be catch and release....

best thing to do is filet the fish and check the meat and if(I mean IF) the meat is good looking then soak in fresh water for three days changing the water every time water gets slimy, and when meat firms up then smoke it and it should be fine. I have said before you will know a bad one when you see one.....

How do you "see" dioxins, mercury, organic contaminats, phosphates, heavy metals etc.?????

Using the guidelines in the regs is a good place to start. However, the only way to be certin not to injest toxins is not to eat the fish.

Steps to eating resident fish of the Willy:

Step 1: Fillet the fish.
Step 2: Place fillets on 1x6 cedar plank.
Step 3: Place 1x6 with fish on BBQ on low heat.
Step 4: Cook until board is lightly charred.
Step 5: Throw fillets away and eat the board
