Default Smelting Friday night on the Sandy

I just got back from smelting on the Sandy... lots of people there... it seemed to me its better to smelt at night when the water is clear, because the smelt can not see your net in the dark !!

As it was, I was able to get them one at a time when there was daylight, but started to get them by the ten's after it got dark... well, there is plenty of fish for everyone... so I hope you try smelting... this was my second season of smelting..

It was fun !!

Thanks for the post, and the pic, Craig.

Puffin and I are planning on hitting it early on Saturday.

He banged out a limit this morning in about an hour of dipping.

If you don't know where to go, ask the guys with the heavy buckets where they gott'm.

Peace, Tom

Just got back from the Sandy. Took the wife out to where I got my quick limit (10 minutes) this morning. Everyone and their dog was out. Not near as productive as daybreak this morning. The wife did manage about 20 pounds for an hour and a half (8:30-10:00 pm)of dipping. Didn't see anyone really setting the world on fire. Between us, we ended up with 45 pounds today. Virtually all are males, which I have been told is pretty typical of the pilot runs.

Just got back from the Sandy 5 min ago. There was 6 of us and we started on the East side of the river where it was SSLLLLOOOOOWWWWWW............ but, thanks to some post here we then tried the west side of the river by the I-84 bridge and limited the 6 of us in about 30 min with two nets.   After we were done with that my dad and a friend of his came up and limited them in about 10 min.

Also the commercial boat came out of there with 2 big totes full in about 50 min. Lots of fish and people but overall a good time.

Thanks for the info once again, and now the sturgeon tomarrow are going to get it.

For those of you that haven't gone out smelting, here is a panoramic picture I stitched together from the East side of the river yesterday around 4pm.

This was my first time to the Sandy.... to get there from Portland, take I84 East.. you can either exit at Marine Drive to be on the west side of the river, or exit immediately after your cross the bridge, which is what I did.

A parking lot will be at the base of the off ramp. All you have to do is park your car, grab your net and bucket, away you go !!! Just follow the crowd of people.... It's also worth while to have a set of waders if you're on the east side of the river, and if you end up on the downstream side of the I84 bridge because the water is fairly shallow[inside bend of the river]... Good luck, I now have enough bait to last me the season...
