My 11-87 seems to pattern best with a modified. However, my 870 patterns best with full....go figure.

Full Choke. It took one season to become a believer.

No one answer here. In general, the larger the shot the less choke, and the tighter the choke the smaller shot is preferred. Small shot (#3-6) sometimes works pretty well with the shorter and tighter chokes. A back-bored 11gauge barrel with a long forcing cone and choke generally works best. Also, good pattern uniformity is preferred over a pattern with a dense center and a ragged fringe. If I had to pick, I'd choose modified for BB or larger, and improved-mod. for smaller sizes, all with the longest forcing cone. The tighter chokes can be better for pass shooting, but generally are more finicky and require more load development and testing to find one that works. If you don't want to play around with lots of patterning and load development, and just want to go hunting, go buy a gun with a fixed modified choke and be done with it.

I have a Benelli SBE1 with a SBE2 barrel on it. Shooting 3in Kent Fasteel #2 at ducks and Blackcloud 3in BB for geese thru a Carlson's extended close range choke (IC) works great for me. The one thing I was told to be very careful about is not using ammo with a flitecontrol wad with a ported choke.

use one that is as big around as your thumb... be sure you backbore your barrels and lengthen your forcing cones

Briley extended light mod works best for the loads and gun i shoot. Only know because i shot many rounds into paper, may be a whole different for your gun/ loads.

I have a SBE and have tried a few different chokes.

Bought a Patternmaster Mid range this year and have been thoroughly impressed. Have yet to actually pattern test it, but when I mount the gun correctly, things die.

Good luck.

SBE II with a Wad Wizard SWAT choke tube. It patterns well with Kent fasteel, Black Cloud, and Hevi Shot.

Whatever patterns best on the pattern board.
I'd focus on your Mod, full and aftermarket wad stripper chokes like the Pattern Master & Wad Wizard.
The pattern board tells no lies, pattern #2's & #3's will all chokes and let the paper tell you.

+1...
This is just one of those topics that unless the person shoots paper w/ his/her own gun it does no good. I've seen the same gun with the same combos pattern different. (go figure ) Even with the best factory loads money can buy not every bird comes down dead (I wish). But if you know you own combo the number of birds that "come down" after you pull the trigger the first and second time should go up. If you are just "missing birds" it has nothing to do with your choke or load.

Cheers,

Adam

Carlsons extended tubes in long range steel work great for my Stoeger and my daughter's Benelli don't break the bank pricing extended forcing cone patterns well they back up their product I shot one out after 10 years and they replaced it no charge

Bored out my old model 12 heavy duck full choke to a modified choke and boy a load of 3" #2 steel patterns real tight three cacklers will testify to it's effectiveness this weekend

Full choke, although it might take some getting used to if you have been shooting a more opened pattern.
