Default 1988 Evinrude 200hp for sale

1988 Evinrude 200hp for sale

$800 obo

Some of you who watched my travails over the last year will recognize that this engine and I never really got along well. There's a fairly sordid but entertaining history that I'll expound upon at the bottom of this post.

The engine is approximately 1988, based on my study of the ignition system and other details. I can't find a serial number to confirm the date because the engine was painted over by a former owner when it was used on a commercial boat.

The engine was running okay when two of the flywheel magnets came loose (a fairly common occurrence on V6 looper outboards, it turns out). I replaced the damaged magnets and re-cemented all six magnets using the Evinrude repair kits. But the engine is not currently running; I believe the stator got damaged when the magnets crashed into it (it is visibly dinged up). I was always planning to use this engine only as a temporary filler until I could afford to fix or replace my Merc, so when the engine didn't immediately start using the newly repaired flywheel, I declared "done" and stopped working on this engine. I truly believe this engine is nearly ready to run, needing a stator, but make no guarantees. This engine kicked my butt and between work and volunteer commitments I just don't have time for it.

The engine includes single engine remote control, cables, and a spare dual engine controller and cables from its previous life as part of a twin engine installation. It includes the injection oil tank. The engine has power tilt/trim and is a 2-stroke V6 "looper".

I also have available both a left hand (from the old lower unit days) and a right hand (from the new right hand lower unit) stainless steel props, 19 pitch. These are for sale separately for $125 apiece and not included in my asking price for the engine but again I'm open to offers.

The Sordid Story:

This past year marked the mechanically most frustrating year of my life. Strike One: I blew up my 225 EFI Merc in December 2010. I couldn't afford a new engine, so I got the brilliant idea of buying an inexpensive older engine for a year while I saved up and replaced the powerhead on the Merc.

I bought the Evinrude from an Ifisher after it was checked out by a shop in Olympia. They advised me that the compression was great and the engine should run strong, but that the lower unit oil was pretty dark and would bear watching.

I made a side trip to Olympia in the course of a trip westside for some volunteer work and picked up the engine. Strike Two of my mechanical woes struck on the way home... the transmission in my Silverado went out and stranded my truck (with the outboard in the back) in Ellensburg. By the time I got the truck back and running, the engine spent a few months on the floor of my garage on a pallet.

Due to volunteer commitments and travel, It took me a couple more months and frustration to round up a few nickel-and-dime parts needed to hook up the engine controls and install it on my boat. By this time I had made it through springer and summer chinook season running on the kicker, but I was getting nervous with fall chinook around the corner so I was really excited when the controls were finally connected and the boat was ready to test.

I was thrilled when I launched the boat and, after some cranking, it fired up and ran us up the river at about 40 mph!

I was somewhat less thrilled when, after running five miles up the river, the lower unit gave up the ghost. Aaaaaagh! Strike 3, or I guess maybe a foul tip since I was still stuck playing a little longer.

A few Craigslist adventures later, I got a nice looking lower unit and installed it on the engine after still more mechanical adventures making shift linkages match up, etc. Just in time! It was Labor Day weekend and salmon were arriving in the Reach.

Two glorious trips ensued during my one- week honeymoon with the engine.

But then the honeymoon ended. The third trip, I launched the boat as usual, cranked the starter and it sounded funny. I popped the engine cover, tried the starter again, and watched in dismay as the top half of the starter broke off and fell overboard into the river. Sigh...another foul tip.

A frantic couple of phone calls (it was one week before a salmon derby) netted me a new starter within days. I installed the starter just before dark and took my daughter and her boyfriend for a quick successful test run as the sun set.

I started the derby that weekend with high hopes with the new starter. But the first morning, I cranked the engine and it wouldn't fire. It didn't seem to be getting spark (presumably because, unbeknownst to me, the flywheel magnets were loose and shifting around, impacting the timing). We fished the morning with the kicker, then during a lunch shore break, tried the big engine again and it fired right up. Game on! We ran up to the honey hole and had a great day.

Day two started the same, cranked with no spark first thing, but fired right up when it warmed up outside. I ran up and down the river a few times but then stopped to chat with a buddy and shut down the engine. When I went to restart it, the engine wouldn't crank: pieces of magnet were jammed between the flywheel and stator. My fishing day was over Another foul tip...almost strike three.

I decided to give this engine one last chance and fix the flywheel and install a new stator. I ordered the magnets and epoxy kit online and found a different online place that thought they could get me a stator. The magnets arrived within days but I got a phone message from the other outfit saying they had found me a starter. Nooo! I wanted a stator. So I cancelled the order and decided to just try the flywheel as a final try since I didn't want to wait another week. I spent hours fixing the flywheel and got it perfect, reassembled everything, and cranked it...but no sparky. Strike Three, game over. I decided that I would not waste another minute on the Evinrude since all the hours I'd spent on it had not gotten me one inch closer to the real goal of fixing the Merc.

The good news is that as soon as i decided to focus on the Merc, I found a great deal from Onstep on his 2011 Opti so my boat is back in the game now without having to spend a bunch more hours wrenching on engines. But now I need to get rid of the Evinrude and make some room in my garage. This engine isn't for the faint of heart after hearing my tale of woe, but I know the parts on it alone are worth more than I'm asking, and someone with moderate wrench skills ought to be able to get some good running out of it.

If you're up for an adventure, make me an offer. I'm also open to trades involving Tekota linecounter or Abu Revo reels, high end fishing rods, or firearms.

Thanks!

I forgot to mention, it's a 25" shaft.
Don't be afraid to make an offer!

OK, I'd really like to reclaim some floor space. How about $500? Still open for trades also. This motor pushed my 21' boat about 40mph on the two trips before the flywheel magnets came out- it actually was a strong running engine.

Price lowered to $400. Really need to move this out of my garage.
Also I've got both a left and right hand stainless props, 19 pitch, for $100 each.
