Default SW Oregon

Just moved to the SW Oregon area...have plenty of rivers in the area to fish, but don't know them that well...Used to fishing the Wilson river for steelies, but that's been over 5 years....Anyone out there willing to share some advice and tips on fishing this area.

Dont do much fishing in the Brookings area, but heres 2 suggestions. latest issue of Fishing and Hunting News lists the Chetco and includes maps.
IF you time it right, it can be one of the best rivers in Oregon.
Second suggestion is to look up Vern Grieves and sons guide service in the phonebook. They fish it and are some of the best in the area as well as good teachers.

I may be wrong but I think it's Kern Grieves...and he is a good guide...boats the Rogue as well as coastal rivers The Chetco is a good winter steelhead stream. Also...don't overlook the Smith River in California. We've done well on the South Fork as well as the Middle Fork drift fishing with silver spoons...treble hook removed and replaced with a single Siwash. Oh...and don't forget the Rogue! It has a well deserved reputation as one of the best in the world.

If Kern Grieves and Vern Grieves are one and the same...he lives in Trail...not Brookings

I think? We are both right. Dad I believe is Kern and lives in Trail. Vernon? one of the sons lives on the coast. Doesn't really matter, if you get ahold of any of them you'll get pointed in the right direction and be on your way.

Call Darrel Allen in Gold Beach, Allen's Guide Service. Book him for a late winter steelie trip on the Rogue, and then do the same for springers. You wouldn't regret it!!

I'd give a second vote for Rick Howard, hes my uncle and one of the best guides on the south coast!

There are some good chinook still around.
I fished the Sixes yesterday and hook 9, landed 3 chinook and a steelie.

Now now TH, don't be giving away those little secrets this time of year like that. It finally got peaceful around there. Just kiddn'. Too bad you can't keep the nooks on the Sixes in years like this where the run moves into the new year.

As for the original post, there's a lot of folks down here to show you the way, it's a great place and a little quieter than the norther part of the state in general. Any specifics needed drop us a line.

yes tailchaser it was very nice! and quite! and lonely! saw one other boat!
one of the nooks was dark the other chrome! and the other in between...
we landed about a 6# steelie (released unharmed) and lost a #12+ pounder at the bank.. I almost had my liitle fingers around her tail when ... pop goes the #1 gammie...

our day beat the day they had on the SF of the Coq. pretty slow still.. but here was a nice school of chromer chinook that went through late in the week.. and all of them were FRESH!

lets see what this rain will bring!??

I fished with Rob Yuen, Secrets Guide Service who lived in Grants Pass (541.476.7092 back in 1992 when I moved to Alaska). If you can find him, tell him Forest Service " Michael Barger" said hi. We used to work together at Galice. Rob is very friendly and is an excellent drift boat handler. He produced spring chinook for me from the driftable portions of Chetco, Middle and Mouth of the Rogue. I'm sure he will work for winter steelhead too, I just fished late spring and summers with Rob. He taught me the river level and the line for Dunn Riffle and Galice Rapids (Level II+).
Anyway, drive on up the Chetco, (yeah find the recent map in Hunting & Fishing News), and take any of the river access roads and bank or drift fish with the other guys. It's like riding a Wilson bike. You'll pick it up again. I sure miss SW Oregon rivers!

Vern is the son of Kern Greives. Vern is running the guide service now. Took a 4 day float with these folks on the Rogue several years back. I would highly recomend these folks for a great expierence.

Thanks for the info...Tried a couple days bank fishing down at the Chetco...running corkies with no luck...Oh well, gotta keep trying...has anyone heard any word on how the Chetco's been doing..I'm wondering if I'm wasting my time cause it's too early...Of course only wet lines catch fish.
