Default Safety Tip: Think before you act

While trying to anchor yesterday in some swift, shallow water in the Nestucca off of three rivers, our anchor got snagged in the notch of a sunken log.

After 10 minutes of hard work (using the oar ends as push poles and levers, we finally freed ourselves.

After we got our breath and anchored again in STILL water, my fishing buddy said, "ya know, we shoulda put on life jackets before messing with the snagged anchor". And then I added: "we also should have had a sharp knife ready at the back end of the boat."

Tip: evaluate the situation first and take the necessary safety precautions before acting. We we're lucky and dumb yesterday.

Glad you got your anchor back, getting one stuck like that can be very dangerous. If all else fails let that anchor rope go, I don't know of any $30 anchor and some rope that's worth your life.

And always keep those PFD's on when messing around like you were.

A trick to remember with a stuck anchor: If you have enough anchor line ... let it out, then swing the boat to shore. From the bank you can walk back upstream, holding the rope and pull the anchor from an angle you couldn't reach from in the boat. Of course, the knife is also effective, but then you need to buy another anchor.

Pete,

Thanks for the tip, it would have worked where we we're, we had enough line to swing to shore.
