Default Sturgeon Derby Confusion

After talking to a few people and getting info in the mail today I thought I would make a post to see if I could end some confusion.

This year there are 2, yes 2 Sturgeon derbys. For those that have participated over the last 10 years, the Fishermans derby is all new this year and Eric Linde is no longer running it. No shotgun start (acutally 2 starts) and from what I understand a different format. The "original" derby in it's original format is now sponsered by GI Joes and I'm sure Pabst and is still run by Eric Linde. The date for the GI Joes/Eric derby is March 1st and I believe that the format will be the same. I also have been told that registration information will be in the mail this week to all past participants. If you have never experienced the testosterone laden high octane start of this event or failed to see the hellicpoter news coverage last year, I'll tell ya, it's major exciting. Right now I do not know if I will fish in both derbys, but I'll gurantee that I will be fishing in the GI Joes derby on March 1st and I look forward to seeing some old friends and competitors at the ramp and also at the banquet.

The one from Fishermans is March 15,th. Lots of prizes and a dinner.
"All proceeds will be donated to the support of sport fisherman and the preservation of our fisheries." They don't spell out just how but I have no doubt in what they say.
I fished in last years and no nothing of this GI Joes one. I recived my Fisherman's entry form in the mail today and am sending it in.

I fished in last years, and got my packet in the mail yesterday, but it is for the Derby on the 15th. They(Fisherman's) said last year that they would not be doing the Derby this year, must have changed their minds. Should be interesting to see how many entries they get.

The Fishermans entery fee is $58.00 this year or $174.00 for a 3 person team and additoinal dinners cost $10.00 each. GiJoes cost?

Fisherman's will not have the shotgun start,(mass boats leaving in 3 massives waves thundering down or up the river) they are going to have each team leave according to entry number leaving at 15 second intervals. The dinner is moved to the Kliver Memorial Armory. The master of ceremonies is Buzz Ramsey.

This year is going to be tough to fgure out whcih one to attend. Attend the original that is top notch and has been a proven success or take a change or the first year for the new Fishermans first year attempt.

Toss a coin

What are the reasons behind the change???
Last year was my first experience with this derby, I also fished the salmon derby in Astoria, both events were great. So why are there two derbys this year?
I got my invitation in the mail today for the one on the 15th (the 11th annual).

Still confused Scott

Fishermans is the one from last year acording to my invitaion. It says " Because of your participation in last year's event we are notifying you by mail to enter now." Does that sound like a new tournament ?
I would say Joes is the new one. I was just at Joe's in Tualatin and they did not know anything about it.

justa thought. probably way off. if the mc from last year left fishermans for a better sponser, like gijoes (not picking one over the other). would it not stand to reason that the one put on by gijoes which is still at the expo center,is the one from last year, just a different sponsor?? same MC. Now fisherman was the sponsor last year so do they not have the right to say the one on the 15th is the same as last year??? the person who mc"d last year i believe used to post on here maybe he still doesand could enlighten us.
