Default thanks David Johnson

if you see this Dave just wanted to thank you for the guide reports. i read everyone and use any and all info to increase my chances for success. you are out there everyday and you know alot! your information is priceless to me. it saves alot of heartaches. so thanks for sharing.

just had a quick question cause i cant ask you on your own guide reports section:

on the prawn thing do you cure those or do you use them plain? do you think they are sometimes better than live sand shrimp? care to share a simple cure for those prawns?

thank you so much for being more involved than the other guides on ifish. if i ever can afford a guided day you will be hearing from me. - James W

Thanks James

Hey I made it back from snow boarding in one peice, sore, but in one peice. One gal in our group got fractured a rist :depressed:

Any way, about the prawns for steelhead.

I usualy use them as is but have sprinkled a little Pro Cure on them for some color. I'm talking about the tail meat here.

For curing the whole prawn, like you'd do for springers it's a whole different process.

As far as better than sand shrimp I think they are sometimes just as good.

It's probably a trade off.

Sand shrimp probably have more scent to them. Prawn meat stays on the hook a lot longer.

The prawn meat is just another tool to take out on the water, give the fish someting different as well as more bang for the buck since it lasts on the hook better and doesn't die on ya. You can take just as many as you think you will need on the trip too.

Suggestion: take some "wet" cured eggs,
fill 1/4 to a 1/2 filled quart jar and then fill the rest up with prawns. Let it sit in the fridge and
rotate once in a while.

Prawn tails?? They don't work!
How many guys you ever see using prawn tails for steelies? Who would want to go to the store & buy prawn tails, peel them, cut them into quater size pcs. Then hit them with a hot pink Pro Cure.
Sounds crazy to me.
They'd look so pretty you wouldn't want to let a steelhead eat any.

FNF,
Your cure for whole prawns to run on a driver or prawn spinner for springers??
Or more like my post for Steelies?
I'm just wondering. I do more of my thing than the spinner of diver thing.

Last year, I saw a guy using those little salad shrimp with a corkie setup. He had prepared them with a bit of red pro-cure and shrimp oil. Saw him catch fish with them. Anyone else try this?

This is what has helped me with win over the Steelhead.
1st you need to find coon striped shrimp. Our fishing stores in the Tri-Cities carry them.

Add two bottles Beau Macs instant dye/bite enhancers
Add 2 scoops sure glow dye (Darker the shrimp the better)
Add 1/4 bottle Pro cure shrimp and prawn oil
Add 1/4 bottle Pro cure garlic plus
Add 1/4 bottle Pro cure kenai cocktail
Add 1-2 oz 200 proof ethyl alcohol (hard to get I work in a lab, 70 % isopropyl alcohol will work.
Add 1/2 cup sea salt
Add drippings from your egg cure

This has helped put 1500+ steelhead in my boat the last 13 years. It will also work on Shrimp used for prawn rigs on Springers. We use just the body of the shrimp after tearing off the head and the tail. No joke about the alcohol. It really does a good job as a scent disperser. It will last and last. I used a batch for almost 4 months! I keep it in a 1/2 gallon Nalgene container although any plastic container will work. When I am done for the night I just keep it on ice or in the freezer.
Good luck, I hope it helps you, like it helped me.

Oh yea,

I'm with Fising is Life, David Johnson is the greatest guide I've ever fished around. We see him on the river and he's the greates. I too will call him first when I'm ready to end my slump. Maybe if my wife read this she would get a birthday hint.

Take care,

Mark

great to see you guy sharing the info. I have to admit I would, like most be aprehensive to do so but you guys seem like a bunch of old friends sippin a cold one and sharing some info. FNF, can't wait to try your recipe, if you came up with that yourself and it works as good as you say then we all should buy you a few silver bullets or your choice, because you may have just saved us a lot of tackle. Wondered how everyone was doing. Fishing on the snake has been slow but there are fish being caught below the Ice Harbor Dam. Can't wait to try the new recipe. Sorry about my previous posting, I'm just figuring the protocol of this web site out. Please bear with me.
Bring on the Springers!!!
good fishing
