Newbi Story
New guy here with my only bragging rights for a Springer. Hope you enjoy.
I had just finished a sales call up in The Dalles, OR. I thought for a change I would take the Washington side route down to Portland. It was a beautiful spring day in the Columbia Gorge. The Rhododendrons had put on their cloaks of many colors and the smell of Spring Chinook was floating gently on the breeze.
While enjoying the scenic gorge, in its full array of color, I past by a small inlet lake, called Drano Lake, that fed off the Columbia and decided to stop and see what was there of interest. I got out of my car, stretched my legs and walked over to a cliff that overlooked the lake. To my surprise there are perhaps 15 to 20 fisherman all casting red plugs out as far as they could reach. While standing there I watched 3 very large Springers sucker for the crimson plugs and was privy to some of the finest netting jobs I had ever seen.
I couldn’t stand it. I ran back to the car like a little boy in a race with his dad; popped open the trunk and took out my steelhead rod. I rummaged through my sample bag and found a clear plastic test plug that was full of little steel balls for noise, like in a child’s rattle. I found a can of rocket red engine spray paint and did up that plug just fine.
I climbed down the side of the bank and weaseled my way into the pitching line. The fella next to me started laughing. He didn’t even try to disguise his amusement. There I was with a lure dripping fire red paint onto the rocks and I was dressed in a 3 piece business suit. The gentleman was able to gather his wits and then the ribbing really started my way. I heard him say “bit overdressed aren’t you sir?” “do you have a dress hat for that suit sir?” I took it in the nature that it was given and replied “ No sir, in order to catch these Springers you got to dress for success.”
I set my plug into motion and it rattled and splattered paint all the way out to the casting point. I started a slow retrieve and my rod tip took a tremendous dive down towards the water. I set the hook hard and then set it again. The Springer shot across the inlet, leaped high into the air and dove for the bottom. I was certainly not in control but I faked my way through the fight and landed a chrome bright hen weighing in at 15 pounds even.
I pulled the hen up onto the beach reached down and gently picked up the fish by the belly turned to the crowd of fellow fisherman and said “yes sir, you got to dress for success to get these chromers” I was rewarded with a resounding applause and huge amounts of out and out belly laughter. I walked back up the bank, fish in tow, put my catch and gear in the trunk of the car and drove off into the sunset saying to myself "Thank you Fish God I really needed that."
Nice to be on board with you all.

Re: Newbi Story
Great story! Maybe I need to get rid of my old dirty "lucky" fishing hat, and dress up a little?

Re: Newbi Story
Well done. Welcome aboard. That is something that I have to say I haven't seen yet. I think the closest that I have come to that is when we were fall fishing this year was the gal that came out from under the top of her boat wearing her night gown, robe and curlers in her hair. What a sight. Good luck and good fishing.

Nice story, jeremy! Welcome to ifish!
Forget the new rod and reel I've been eyeing the last few months, I'm going straight to a tailor shop for a new wool suit (1-piece)

Re: Newbi Story
Welcome aboard, Jeremy. Hasn't anyone told you have to use the same lure everybody else is catching them on??? What are you trying to do, set the tacle industry on it's ear?
Good story!

Re: Newbi Story
welcome
what he needs to say is this was his one and only springer and he can and has shut down the bite for springers all by his self. we hope to change that this year so if you see a guy in a suit and one trying to hide thast would be us so say hi and than you may want to find a new river as he has more than likly shut this one down
welcome again
