Tony's Big Butt!!! (pic)
Philomath, Oregon native Tony Davis, founder and owner of Kodiak Custom Tackle caught this huge halibuit in near shore waters of the Gulf of Alaska this summer on one of his "prototype" custom jigs.
Tony's halibuit was caught using 110# tough line, a Penn Reel, and an eagle claw hook. It smashed a IGFA line class record by over 100#'s, however the record was declined due to a few violoations.
Regardless it is on H... of a big fish and to catch this fish on a prottype lure he is marketing in the near future. Nice work Tony! You guys are going to see alot more of this kids before he is done!
By the way the fish was 91 inches long!

Re: Tony's Big Butt!!! (pic)
My little tiney butt only weighed in at 50 lbs (from Kodiak). That one would be fun! Great job on the big butt!

Re: Tony's Big Butt!!! (pic)
Tony tells the story far better than me and he has over 45 minutes of video footage, but here we go.
Tony and his camera man where in a skiff about mile half from the facility that they work at. They hooked the monster and couldn't budge it for almost 45 minutes, Rule # 1 broken; Tony tightned the drag and Nick fired up the motor and used the boats power to get the huge fish off bottom since they where in less than 200 feet of water, Rule # 2 broken; Nick and Tony shared the labor of racheting the behimith in, Rule # 3 broken, they towed the fish by rod and reel behing the skiff to the dock, Rule #4; shot halibuit twice w/ 44 magnum, Rule # 5; removed giant fish from water w/ boat crane.

Too bad he killed this big hen. Millions of eggs gone and not that good to eat.
Nice butt though.

That is an epic fish.
Ditto what Keta said.
It'd be hard to turn it loose though.

Re: Tony's Big Butt!!! (pic)
IGFA does not allow shooting or harpooning for record fish. You'd have to be nuts to stick a gaf in a fish that big. I've lost several knuckles on the gunnel to 60-70 lb halibut.
Had one that tore himself off a 6 inch throat gaff that was stuck clear through the thickest part of his back, right behind the head (ya, ya - it was a bad shot, I was aiming for his head). He took off and the gaff just ripped through his entire back. Fortunatley the hook held and we got him back for another shot!

Re: Tony's Big Butt!!! (pic)
Release!! Release!! Ditto Keta. Our guide flipped when he saw a guy cleaning a 150lbr+ on the dock when we got back from a days trip. We released 2 over 200LBS!!! They were both caught in less than 120ft of water. That's the only way to fish halibut. No more 500-600 ft of barn door pullin'. We'll, unless I run out of fish.
