Default New Drags For a C-251

Has anyone replaced their own drags on a Calcutta 251? Is it smarter to just take it to Ollies?

Thx

Obviously it is smarter to take it to Ollie’s but what fun would that be.

I've did mine last month. It was my first time inside this reel and it really is not that hard. Get the drag washers and grease from Ollie's (about $8 for parts and lifetime supply of grease). The larger washer requires it to be greased. Slowly disassemble the handle side of the reel until you see the drag washers. Remove and replace with new ones (there are 2). Then reassemble reel. Use the reel schematic to reference parts placement. Take your time and lay the parts out in the order you remove them. You can do it-just go slow if this is your first time. When you're finished and it works smoothly then you know you have done it right. Once you've mastered it you'll feel good about yourself and you're on your way to maintaining all your reels.

If not, put in box and then take to Ollie's and admit defeat.

Thanks guys,

I've never picked smart over fun. Why start now. I'll give it a whack, and keep a big ziplock bag ready in case I admit defeat.

Go to www.shimanofishing.com, find the reel diagram if you don't have it to hand and print it out. Now you have a fighting chance. Next, go to http://fish.shimano.com/service/accessory_center.html
and look through the maintenance section until you find an article you like. May I suggest the "Round, Variable Brake System Equipped (VBS) Reel Maintenance Tips" at

http://fish.shimano.com/service/round_tips.htm

Now you're ready to rock and roll!

The ONLY thing you need to lubricate a replacement (white) drag disk is a thin coating of Shimano Reel Grease. That's it! Don't use too much, and don't use anything else, either. "Less is more".

take it apart and lay all the parts in a line without turning them over,
it is also a good idea to have another reel just like it to use as a reference
once you get the courage to clean one you will find it very simple.
