Default Used inboard help?

I am looking at a used boat with an inboard motor. It has about 250 hours on the motor. Is that a lot? How many hours should one expect to get out of an inboard motor?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Grits,
That is actually low hours. I have seen marine V8's with 2500+ hours. The longevity of any combustion engine is the same whether it's in a boat or car. It is directly related to the maintenence it recieves. Oil changes in boats are needed more frequently due to the constant load. It is like driving up-hill at all times.
If your not familliar with boats I would recommend you have it checked out by a proffessional. It may be the best 150 bucks you ever spend. At a minimum you should run a compression check on the engine and check the gear lube in the outdrive. Ask for all service records. Water test the boat for performance. Leave the boat in the water after the test for a sufficient period of time to determine if it is taking on any excessive water.
If you are familliar with boats and just needed the engine life info......please excuse my longevity. Good luck should you choose to purchase.

It helps when we know what kind of engine and outdrive. Certain makes have their weak points. Another point to consider is how old and whether it has fresh or raw water cooling, especially if it's seen a lot of salt water.
And 250 hours ain't much. Either the boat is a late model or it's seen very little use.
