Flyfishing \'nooks year in Review (w/ pics)
Well some people will believe this post, some won't, I don't really care either way but I'm posting our results of our fall season flyfishing for chinook here in Southern Oregon. The rivers included are the Rogue, Elk, Sixes, and Coos Rivers. In all between 3 of us we've hooked over 300 fish. We only count legally hooked fish also. We would average 7-8 hookups a day. Like anything else there's a definite difference between people who know how to hook them legally and those who swipe at any touchy feeling. I don't do a lot of preaching on how to flyfish, it's something I kinda keep to myself and enjoy since not too many people do it. I'll give away some secrets, but some others you'll have to learn for yourself.
So here's a small piece of the scrapbook, all of the fish were landed with 10 lb Maxima ultragreen leader, 9' 10 wght loomis blank and I made the rod, and a redington reel.
Here's what can happen with a rod not quite big enough for the fish....
And another chromer...
The largest fish of the year so far, weighed in at just under 44 lbs....
Then, one of the days catches. We needed one more to complete the limit and my buddy nailed one 1/2 hour after I left to get it done.
Hopefully everyone had a good year. I'm starting to go after the steelhead on the fly this weekend. My friend hooked three on a fly yesterday. I can't wait. It's one of two fish I really need to get on the fly to complete my local slam...(I just made that one up! ). Tuna is the other one and that's coming this next year. Cheers.

There won't be any ponytail near my neck. It's too red for that, the bald spot in the back would be a hamper also.

Re: Flyfishing \'nooks year in Review (w/ pics)
Yeah, we were on the elk a couple of weeks ago, hard to say if it was us or not, but lately that's been our spot. Actually one place I'll admit to fishing is in Yachats a couple of weeks ago. I've been inspecting a construction project there and sat and watched salmon after salmon swim in from the ocean. Even watched them beach themselves and not a single person fishing them. So I brought back the rod and slayed a few in my off time. It was pretty cool. Everyone looked at me like I was crazy, then they saw the light.
On the flyline issue, it varies a lot depending on where we're fishing. Tidewater I have a type II sink on a type III shooting head. This gets it out there a long way and gets down quicker. Up the river, or in shallow areas I use a type II clear intermediate. This doesn't cast nearly as far, but is less likely to spook fish. All of these lines are WF designed. From there I have a 25 lb shock tippet, and then goes to 9' of 10 lb maxima leader ultragreen, or on occassion 15 lb seaguar flourcarbon leader if it's really clear. Many of the tidewater fish are caught on a clouser or comet, upriver it's more of a streamer with a little flash or egg patterns.

About 25 or 30yrs ago I remember Mylar flys being the big deal for fly fishing down in the Sieltz area where spit is I believe. Haven't heard much of it since or the Flyfishing there. Way to go and thanks for sharing.

Re: Flyfishing \'nooks year in Review (w/ pics)
Good job guys!
Ive caught quite few Chinook on a fly. Some days I hooked just as many on the flyfishing as my buddies hooked using bait. My favorite fly is a Grady's Special, simple but effective. Maybe I should get another fly rod and start fly flicking again.

Re: Flyfishing \'nooks year in Review (w/ pics)
Nice fish.
Looks like you guys need to post over on the FF forum and share some 'advice'
Actually one thing I will mention, fly fishing for salmon in salt (like in your pics) is a LOT different than casting to fish stacked up in pools and riffles.
Some of those pics almost look like siletz bay....hmmm I might have to try that next year.

Thanks, TC, this is an inspiration to us all - especially a beginner with flies for big ones like me.

Re: Flyfishing \'nooks year in Review (w/ pics)
yip. Flies work! I caught several on jigs this year, and I mean several. No scent, no shrimp tail, just a plain jig.
I'm convinced flies would work just fine!
Now, next year, to actually DO IT!
