Default Borax?

So, when I went to cure up my first round of eggs, I pulled the "soak" cure from Bob's Board. It called for borax, so I looked for borax. What I finally found was Twenty Mule borax. It's packaged for use as a laundry aid. I've always wondered if there's something else in it - scents and such. Now, in another post I'm seeing references to 321 and 211 borax. I'm confused.

Where do you get your borax and why do you use what you use? What are the differences?

The 20 Mule Team borax is the one. No scent to it. It works great for curing eggs and for doing laundry!! Just don't confuse it with Boraxo, which does have soap in it.

20 Mule Team is the stuff. Just make sure you buy borax, not boraxo. 321 is 3 parts borax, 2 parts sugar, 1 part salt (non iodized ielain salt) 311 should be easy to understand now. A good book is out to help with a bunch of egg recipes.MM

Mule Team.

Non Iodized Salt.

Sugar. You pick the color.

Mix them up un a glass container.

321 or 211 is the ratio of the ingredients.

211 is 2 cups Borax. 1 cup salt. 1 cup sugar.

Some folks add jello or gatoraid for flavor. These cures taste better with roast beef on rye. But I cannot prove they catch any more fish than the traditional cures do.

Sand shrimp outfish borax( or any other cure) by at least 20%. But ya'll gotta do something woth all the eggs from those winters...so ya might as well cure 'em.

The egg cure book is a great source of steelhead cures. Once you read it a lot of the basics are laid out for you.

Try a few and use whatever gives you confidence. Steelhead will eat most anything. Use what you will fish hard all day long.

Oh yeah, if you have a BSF( whiffle spool) put some teflon tape over the spool to seal the innards of the reel from the egg goop. Makes em go longer between trips to Ollies.

Good Luck.
