Newbie (sort of)
I've been a member for a bit but I understand that tradition dictates that one must post a fish story to become a "real" member - so.....
I'm fishing for Springers with MadMikey and I get a solid takedown. The fish was not keen to the program and promptly headed back towards the ocean. We were in his driftboat and the fish was hooked at the top of the run we were fishing, so hoping for another pass I was put on the bank to fight the fish. Easy enough, except that as I stepped out of the boat I looked at the reel to see how much line was left and noticed that the reel was wobbling a bit on the seat. As I was pondering this the 5500 came flying out and slammed against the first guide of the rod. I yelled at Mikey (who was laughing quite heartily by the way) and grabbed the reel with my now free hand, hoping the fish would stop long enough to reattach the reel to the seat. I managed to screw it about halfway back in when the fish (obviously alerted by my buddy's laughter) recognized my disadvantage and repeated the performance. For about 5 minutes I fought the beast with rod in one hand, reel in the other and buddy laughing hysterically until the fish paused long enough for me to secure the reel back to the rod. Mikey did recover in time to grab the net and I actually landed the chrome bright Nook! I don't think either one of us have had this happen to us before, but I bet you can guess what gets checked each time now before we start fishing

Re: Newbie (sort of)
Fish was only about 20. I thought of the story when I was looking through fishing pics last night and found the photo of that fish....I'll post it up later this evening hopefully - it's a good pic! It could only have been better if MM had the camera out while the scenario was playing out....THAT would be a classic

Re: Newbie (sort of)
Didn't get a chance to read this until I fished with Erik today and heard he put his newbie story up finally.
Yes, I think I was laughing but I was also giving Erik a hard time because he had the fish on for a LOOOOOng time.
To this day and before that I have never seen a Springer fight like that, it was a good half hour battle. Not only did the reel fall off but the fish smoked it, you could smell it 30 yards away and we had to use a spare the rest of the trip.
We actually fought it for a while on anchor but even with the drag set properly the fish was pulling us off anchor and I did want to go through the run again, obviously!!!
When it was over Erik didn't just get a stick to bonk it, rather a small tree and whacked away like a madman, very funny.
Now I think he should post on the FF'ing board about his first flyhooked steelhead a few years ago that gave him a royal beating, the fish won that one but then Erik had to go buy a bunch of new toys!!!
