Wilson River Report 12/29/ Mills to Donaldson
Bill and I put in late... I'm sick, and he made me go. :depressed:
Anyway, it was nice to breathe fresh air.
It was cold, but the body heat from my fellow 3000 anglers on the river made it a lot cozier.
We didn't get bit, nor see one fish hooked... Oh, I forgot. I did have and see one fish take my jig and sandshrimp, but he let it go.
My steelhead season this year is embarrassing, dude!
Jen
PS: Feeling much sicker now, thank you.

Re: Wilson River Report 12/29/ Mills to Donaldson
Jen,
Your not the only one who's having problems catching that silver sided ghost. My year has been dismal.
I'm starting to think this steelhead fishing thing is getting to be a little overrated(ha ha).
But then again, like they say the worst day of fishing is better than the best day of working.
Hopefully will get some luck here soon.
Later, WW

Tilla told me he saw you drift by when he was anchored at I don't know the name of the place but its where most people anchor , he also told me he said hi. Sorry to hear you are sick, I am in the same boat. Hope you get well soon  .

Fish will come if you keep believing that fish bite wet hooks.
Get Well Soon.

Jen, also I forgot to had that I hope you feel better soon. I'm trying to get over a head cold also and bad fishing doesn't seem to help any.
Hope you get better soon.

Re: Wilson River Report 12/29/ Mills to Donaldson
...and then, if I wasn't sick enough, I WAS frustrated enough to grab my gear and go out back. So frustrated that I actually trespassed on my neighbors property to try and catch a fish!
No luck there either! (And don't tell on me! I felt SO sneaky, but you know... those fish always live where you can't go!)

Jenni, great to here you had the strength to go along for the ride. Most would just sit it out in front of a fireplace with a book but what fun it that I was out there of Saturday with the rest of the herd and did not see one fish on, other than the one 35ld chinook that hit my plug. Rags, at the oars, No Pilgrim at shotgun and I was the anchor boy.
Liek week end warrior said, it's better to be on the river than suffering at home or work.
I am sure the fresh air will help your recovery but not as fast as a 35 pound chinook hen full of eggs would. Picture posted under Wilson River for Friday. Rags posted the two of this fish.
GET WELL, and remember, grasshopper says,

Re: Wilson River Report 12/29/ Mills to Donaldson
All-
My dad and I went down last Friday, I skipped out of work about noon. We got there by 1:30 and fished until dark between Mills and Donaldson's... I expect Duyck's to be packed but when we got there it was empty. We started at the top of the hole in the wind and moved down 4 times about 10' each time. I was having problems feeling the bite, switched from lead to slinkies and next cast fish on... It was a very light bit, I thought it was a trout, and I double set the hook because when I set it, it came right towards us. Got it to the boat, nice hen about 6 lbs. We kept changing our casts, and about 20 minutes later fish number 2. Another hen almost identical to the first...
Here is what I learned, always be willing to move to find the fish.
1) We were in the exact spot where we nailed them last year and didn't touch a thing.
2) If you aren't feeling them hit, change your gear. I was losing shrimp every 10th cast, but I didn't ever really feel anything.
3) Set hard and often. I was puzzled when I caught the first fish because of the light bite only to find out that the hook was alll the way down it's throat!!! Just because they slammed the bait last year, doesn't mean it will be the same this year...
4) Vary your casts, leave no water uncovered. We saw one roll on the opposite shoreline, first cast to the new spot and I got
it....
5) Stay until dark, the fish really start moving right before dark, and still bite.
Most of all, enjoy being on the water. I don't even like salmon, but I love to be in my driftboat admiring the scenery.

Re: Wilson River Report 12/29/ Mills to Donaldson
We floated the Wilson today too. The fishing was pretty slow.... We had a couple good days last week but fishing tapered off. Lots of company and not many catching fish. A guy at Duycks said he only saw 4 caught all day. Anybody else do anygood?

Re: Wilson River Report 12/29/ Mills to Donaldson
My son and I spent a couple of hours at the Wilson fishing around Ming creek  (going by the Fishing in Oregon book). Had one bite but I was slow on the take so I missed it. Saw probably six other anglers but no fish caught. But at least the weather and the company were great.

Re: Wilson River Report 12/29/ Mills to Donaldson
I lip'd a hen who spit the hook at my feet, looked like about 5 or 6 lbs, rolled on its side, no clip, very pretty. Nothing else but snaggy bottom. Nice water tho...17+/- miles up
Met a fellow Ifishr ~ thanks for the lead!, I rigged up for a 6th time, hung up and lost it so I gave up, waders have a leak and that foot was FREEZING...maybe tomorrow after the doctor appt.

Re: Wilson River Report 12/29/ Mills to Donaldson
My knee is starting to heal, going to take a friend out tomorrow to shoot a cow elk----?
Well I think I know where to take him. then I figgure by Jan. 1st. my knee ought to let me hit the river. then look out the fish will be there and biting!!?? Look out jen if it rains I might be in your back yard. By the way Jen. do you have any pull with Okoma reels? Hope I spelt it right, you know me and my spelling. If you do have, any chance they would donate one for our raffle at the sport show. Let me know. Jerry

Gee Jennie, 10 minutes after I asked you why you were not on your own river as you passed by, Sneaky One latched into a 9 lb hatchery buck, we were a few boats above you.
Even though you may be out of sorts, your pleasant smile brought us luck.
