Jigs and snaps?
So, you're tossing jigs and you've made your pass through the hole. You want to try a different color. Do you really want to tie on a new jig? Or would you prefer to drop a new jig onto a snap of some kind? Duolock or other, what kind do you use? Do you even use one?

Re: Jigs and snaps?
would not recomend using a snap.It would cause the jig to hang straight up and down.I've always thought you want the jig to be horizontal.

Re: Jigs and snaps?
Amp,
A lot of people have forgotten more about jigs that I even know, but I have to ask..... If they aint on pink/white 1/8 oz jigs, do you think another color will make them bite?
I ask because everyone I have talked to that knows jigs fishes pink/white. At least during the winter run.
I wait the in great anticipation for the response.

Re: Jigs and snaps?
I carry 1/2 dozen or so pretied on 18" leaders with a small swivel. Quick change on/off main line equals more time in the water. Really pays off on a cold day when tying is more difficult.

Re: Jigs and snaps?
Hey Mark and the jig-o-matic dog:
How about a hot pink beaumac? Worked for last years' steelie challenge. It was an 1/8oz, I'll give you that.

Re: Jigs and snaps?
I use a knot, and a pink jig. I'm not convinced that changing color of a jig is a drastic enough change to move a fish that has already seen the first jig.

Re: Jigs and snaps?
I've experiemented with swivels and jigs - I didn't like how the jig "sat" in the water. Was much different that if just tied on normally. I like Day Late's idea of tying some leaders, but I have so many dang jigs, that doesn't really make sense for me. I do often change jigs and I can see it being an advantage if you only have five or so types of jigs you use. I own about 50 different styles, and regularly use about 20 of them, so it won't work for me.
Silver Hilton - it sure does make a difference tying on a new color. I've never caught a winter steelhead on a jig, nor am I very knowledgable at all when it comes to winters, but I know a huge amount about summer steelhead. Changing your jig will make a difference. First, sometimes this summer when I would fish a slot, and catch two or three fish out of that slot, I wouldn't get another hit on that jig in that slot. Tie on a new color or pattern, boom!
One other time, I ran FIVE different jigs through a slot (I could see a number of fish in the slot). Ran them through at different lengths, but nothing. Tied on a red jig with red beads, FIRST CAST bam! It pays to change, at least during the summer. I'm still trying to figure out how the heck winters are caught period. I'll post information I find throughout this winter on jig fishing and switching colors, etc.

Re: Jigs and snaps?
I have to agree with Sparkleboy. I have run a jig through hole at different deeps with many passes. Changed jig color and hooked up on the first cast.
I don't like the snap swivel idea for two reasons. The fisrt is presentation. How the jig rides in the water. The second is tangles. The more terminal gear the more chance of someting getting hung up and wasting a cast and time.

Re: Jigs and snaps?
OK, I get the message about not using a snap swivel at the head of the jig. What about a barel swivel just below the float and then have a loop big enough at the head of the leader for the jig to fit through. I use that barel swivel anyway to tie my leader to the mainline and keep the bead and float off the jig so why not use a loop at the end for easy on/easy off? ?
Would this work without a significant increase in snags? I don't see how it could make the jig ride any differently in the current.

Re: Jigs and snaps?
I use a small swivel on the mainline. pretie about 20 inches of momo to jig and attach a small stainless snap( the smallest I can find) to end of leader. carry about a dozen pretied like this no problem with tangles and no breakage so far...Roger

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">I'll have to disagree with ya on this. I catch a lot of winter fish on jigs and many times switching from pink to orange or red has made all the difference in hooking fish.

Re: Jigs and snaps?
Tie direct to your line, no snaps. Change is good, I usually carry more than 1 rod set up with different colors. Mark " the porcupine " Anderson has been seen with up to 5 or 6 different rods tied with different colors and styles.......
