Default pole repair

I have a pole that I used about 10 yrs ago. It had, I say had, a foam type butt to it. Well, it has dry rot away. I can rub all the foam off with my fingers. Is there any is fix to somehow rewrap the butt with something usable? I would sure love to have it as a backup pole. Thanks

I re-wrapped some of my rods with a cork tape I bought years ago. Not sure where to get it around this area, but you might want to try Ollie Damon's.

The quality of the tape I had was very high, and the feel was awesome. It had adhesive back, so it was easy to put on.

After you remove the old foam and sand it down a little, buy some nice quality smaller diameter rope. make a dry run with the wraping so you have the right length, apply glue and rewrap the butt. This comes out nice and gives you a great grip.

You should redue the whole lower end of the rod if it's a two piece. You can at times replace the lower end with cork. But the problem is that the cork from boring it out will be to thin.
If you do decide to replace the lower end be vary careful when removing the reel seat, so the you don't crack the blank.

Anglers Workshop in Woodland as your best selection as far as parts. Their phone number is 360-255-9445, or check out their web site at
www.anglersworksop.com
If your driving north on I-5 at Woodland they are right along the highway on your left.
Good people to deal with. They use to be one of my wholesale companies when I was building rods.

Rod repair for short term use or or a rod rebuild is more like a long term fix. Getting it back to origingal condition is a chore but can be done. Do you have the time is it worth it,sentiment or just a fish catching tool you cant live without! New cork is almost as expensive as a new rod.
The rod rebuild or installing new cork or rubber (cheaper) means you strip everything off like guides and old handle & reelbutt etc. also the finnish if you feel ambitous and want everything new and fresh. Slide & glue the rod handle on your guides. Now is the time to cutomize the wrapping or add name put some finnish or varnish. Then you have got an almost new rod.
Short term fix is getting finding that cork tape ultralight mentioned. I have a back up steelhead rod that the cork disintergrated I believe due to egg cure or inferior cork. Since I wanted to fish with the kids (their rod) and not do all the steps or spend $$ to restore to original condition. I found some some 1/8 to 1/4 inch nylon cord and wrapped it on with aqua seal glueing it down over the old cork. It worked great and is still landing fish from time to time.
