Default Looking for a GOOD rain jacket!

The last couple trips out I've come home soaked from the rain so I'm looking for a GOOD rain proof jacket for winter steelhead fishing. Any recommendations?

Grundens are the best ! I use them for work and fishing and am always nice and dry. The jacket I have has the neoprene cuffs that really make a big difference keeping water from running back down your arm.

Fisherman's is offering their commercial grad Grundens rainwear for 20% off their regular price right now. Grundens is a super product, especially at this price offering.

If you're sitting in a boat all day in the rain I'd lean toward rubberized gear. If you banking it, I'd stick with something breathable. I broke broke down last year and bought Patagonia's "deep wading jacket" and I've had a number of very comfortable days in the rain in this breathable shell. It retails for about $185. It's cut short for wearing over chestwaders, has two big pockets on the outside, and a great hood. The cuffs are neoprene with velcro to snug them up. I definitely have no regrets.

By the way, I've caught a number of nice fish this fall using your jigs. I'm impressed with the durability and quality. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the replies guys. I should mention that I'll need a jacket to fit over breathable waders and also I primarily fish from the bank so ease of movement is important.

I recommend the Columbia Sportswear Lake Superior FWG Jacket™. I wore mine today and it was pouring and I stayed bone dry. It is a Goretex jacket that you can zip in a liner if you wanted to.....you have seen it. It is the green jacket that I am wearing in the picture on your site. Call me if you need to....

I also have Cabela's Guidewear raingear. It has served me for a week at a time in Alaska, in driving rain, where we never got really dry until we got back on the plane. After that, the piddling stuff we call rain down here is child's play. The coat worked perfectly, is comfortable, durable (mine is about 7 years old). It has good packets, and lycra cuffs to help keep the water out. I also have the overalls, which are great for boat use.

Two of my friends also got these, and have been also very happy. They are not the cheapest, though. I think they run about 160 bucks for the coat and 180 for the bibs.

One thought just occurred to me, however. The velcro straps on the cuffs run the wrong way for fly fishing. They tend to catch the line once in a while. Not a big deal, but a feature to consider if you fly fish.

I found that Dutch Harbor rain gear is the toughest stuff. It is so light and you can move. It is also very durable. It feels like you can put your finger through it but you can not. My dad is a landscaper, and that is what he uses. It retails for about $50 a piece at G.I.JOES. I recommend getting a bigger jacket because you probably want to to wear a vest.

I have the Cabelas Guidewear bibs, jacket and the parka!
All great stuff!
and it has been put to the test down here on the SC and works great!

I bought my wife a FroggToggs jacket this fall, she wanted something lite weight to walk in the AM with... it's nice
I ended up ordering one for myself and will be trying it out this winter! I think it over a fleece might be the ticket!
I als bought my kids a complete set jacket and pants off ebay.com
Nice and affordable and easy to wear!

Going back to my skibum days, I am partial to my 3-ply gortex. (Mine is a Marmot, but there are plenty of other names). Paper thin, tough, pitzips for extra ventilation, great storm hood, velcro cuffs, waist cinch, lifetime warranty. Overall, the perfect shell for layering. Now for my confession - I've got a Redington Q-Nimbus wading jacket on the way... wanted more pockets. lnf

The Redington Q-Nimbus is a great jacket. It's basically the same jacket previously marketed under the Streamline name.

A couple others that are considered top notch are Patagonia and Simms.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">That looks like the one. $119 is a pretty good price for gear of that quality. The Simms equivalent is close to 300 bills.

Columbia Sportswear Omni Tech Extreem Fishing Gear. Breathable, waterproof, comfortable, and looks pretty good too!
They also have maching Omni Tech pants (I don't have these yet). Also have the Hogman Waterprrof Coat...prefer the Columbia.
Both are shells, not heavywieghts.

O.K. so it's yuppie (and very east coast) but I find LL beans stuff to be bomb-proof, comfy and not over-priced.

frogg toggs!!!! Absolutely waterproof, they only weigh ounces (coat and bibs) and cost about $75 for the set. They feel like tyvek but they aren't, it's a breathable 3 layer fabric. Getm on the net.

Have you tried out the Frog Toggs yet?
Just curious. They look really cool but I'm a little skeptical 'til I get more feedback.

Wow...lots of suggestions for rainwear. My suggestion if you want to save money is to check out sierra trading post. They have a website SierraTradingPost.com and a lot of their stuff is just overstock or certain colors. You can get everything from Patagonia to Columbia etc... I got a breathable Browning gore-tex jacket from there and have never gotten wet yet. Unless I forgot to put the hood up Good luck with whatever you decide. Haven't tried y

I dunno about the Helly's or Grundens being 100% waterproof, the best water resistant option, but I learn otherwise about two weeks ago.

Stop by the Columbia outlet stores. The Mountain Park store had some nice Titanium (top of the line breatheable)that were list of $230 for $60. No liner or pants, though.

Gortex as mentioned does wear out. I wore it in the Military out in the field in the rain and put it through the test of tests. I was wet the first day of rain and it was brand new. All of the guys were wet.

Pretty much the norm for rain gear in Alaska for the commercial fisherman is HH, Dutch Harbor, or Grunden. They all have didderant grades of tuffness. The bounus of these three is that they are a little tougher to move around in. One nice thing is that you can throw them in the washer as much as you want unlike top of the line fabrics which to break down and leak.

My $.02

patagonia sst. Bad thing is they cost, good thing is they wear and wear. They have articulated sleeves ( great for casting and rowing), neoprene cuffs, pockets and pockets. The outside pockets are velcro and the inside pockets are zipper. The jacket has a great hood, zipper front with velcro wind flap closure too. You can hike your buns off all day and be warm and comfy. They are not bulky in the least. They keep water out and heat in. Do a search at that co-op store. Sometimes you can find a great deal on that jacket. Great deal meaning mid 200.00. Sure now your all laughing. Besides breathable waders and spiked boots this jacket is the bomb. That's the first time (and last) I've ever used that term. It's got the patagonia pledge also. I think that's life.

If you want to buy your last pair of rain gear and stay bone dry and warm you cant beat Filson.

Rubber rain gear is great but it only lasts so long, for me at least.

Gore tex is nice for the bank. They just get old and lose their water repellency. I usually will spray my gore tex with a product called camp dry. Rain beads off of it after you do it. Eventually all gore tex wears out.

There are two exceptional jackets and as far as I knwo they are the only 2 exceptional ones..

1. the Simms Guide jacket
2. the paragonia sst jacket

I am sure there are some other good ones but these two are the best.

My favorite is the 12 dollar coat and pants at bi-mart. I think they're called cedar creek or something like that. I don't like insulated rain jackets because it's not always cold when it's raining, especially if you're on the oars.
