RR,

What about just borax and brown sugar? Pros & Cons? When I get some eggs that's what I use.

There are 3 great steelhead egg cures. In order from best to worst...

1- Sand Shrimp.

2-Borax. Either 321 or 211. Both catch fish just fine.

3-Whatever is left over from salmon season.

Mark and the dog.

Aufish..I use borax and brown also and have caught fish with it,But I always add some kind of color.Lots of people use natural colored Roe but I have more confidence with the hot pinks and reds,It just looks so good.As for pro's and con's can't really think of any other than it's just a different cure to try.

Pretty much the same as Flatfish, shrimp (the eating kind), 321 or a sulfite based cure. MM

I too aotta agree with Flatfish. The best cure is sand shrimp then what is left from Salmon season. Hooked 6 steelies this year already on old Nook eggs and shrimp.

I've been reading a lot about borax cures, and other special cures not only on this post, but other threats for steelhead. Personally, my dad and I have only used regular table salt to cure our eggs for as long as I can remember. I would like to cure up some borax eggs this winter, because the fact that they catch fish just can't be overlooked. I've never done the borax thing, and really don't know how to do it, so if any of you have some spare time and are in a sharing mood, could you e-mail me directions on how to do it, preferrebly in a step by step, photoshop quality brochure format? No, I'm only kidding about that last part. But I would appreciate a step by step e-mail on your favorite borax cure.
Also, do any of you add scent to your eggs during the curing process? If so, what do you add, and when do you add it?
Thanks a ton. I have a ton of eggs to cure up, and want to try new things.

I use procure with the die already in it with lots and lots of borax. Works excellent. I only cure small silver skenes or steelhead skenes. Dont wanna get those eggs to big. If you really wanna **** them metalheads use spawnbags! They drive steelhead nuts.
