Smile Moose, moose and more moose, post up your photos!!

Hi ifish hunters. I've noticed a lot of great moose photos posted up this year. Ok, so maybe I'm noticing more because my wife and I are hunting for them next September in northern BC. Anyway, I thought it might be fun to have people post up some of their pics, or those of friends/fellow hunters in one place.

So if you have photos, stories, etc, please feel free to add them on here. Not taking anything away from some of the individual threads and stories I've seen, just thought it might be fun to have a bunch of photos in one place.

I'll start. Here is a photo of a shiras moose taken 3 years ago in NW WA. My buddy's son was lucky enough to draw the tag on his first try.

Thanks,
RO

Not my biggest, but probably the most memorable because this one charged me. I dropped him with a shot in the face at about 20'

2011 Shiras moose from the Kootenay Mountain range in SE British Columbia. 386 yards on shot with the 300WSM 165 gr accubond handloads. Tough hunt but very well worth it. Thanks

That was a different incident. My hunting partner and I decided to pray for a Moose one trip just as we started hunting at daylight. Seconds later we heard a crash...ran up a few yards to discover 2 bulls fighting. We got them both

That was also a VERY MEMORABLE hunt! BTW...Moose hunting is the BEST! I LOVE Moose hunting, and miss that more than anything else in Alaska

Packing out - Alaska, 2001. We were on the Arctic circle hunting east of Kotzebue about 120 miles. Do It Yourself hunt, starting Sept 1st. My brother and I shot bulls same day, about 1/2 mile apart, on September 9th -- and 6 1/2 measured miles from camp! Packing statistics: 4 men packed for 12 hours per day for 5 1/2 days !! You couldn't pay me enough to do that again... On the evening of the 14th, a federal game warden flew into the lake we camped on, and told us about 9/11 -- twin tower attack !!

Here are some pictures of my cousins sons first game animal which happened to be a moose. This is in northern Maine. 60 1/4" as I recall! Not bad for a first anything!

They got it pretty close to the road and had enough help[ to get it out whole. This was last year! 2010

Some really nice bulls! And...some OUTSTANDING photographs as well. How about another big one! A 76" Booner taken by a friend of my Brother out of Kotzebue about 20 years ago. Sorry for the poor picture. I spilled coffee on it

I don't know about the rest of you but these pictures make me want to go Moose hunting again! Anyone else on the board ever use a coffe can/shoestring call? I had great success using it when I lived in Alaska

Now that's impressive! Both the great Moose, and the distance packed. The farthest I ever shot one from the boat or airplane was 2 miles...although near the end of the pack I would have sworn it was 10 miles

These were bulls taken by an outfitter that I guide for. The small bull was taken by the 17 yr old that is a resident and his family helps us with the hunters and meat transportation. The bulls ran from 58" to 69" and the "best one" at 67 1/2" is not in the photo's.

That would be great Gun Rod Bow. I didn't know that Terry had done a moose hunt, let alone archery. My buddy Jaxflyfish and I hope to try to take our moose with ours bows next September, and our wives are hunting with rifles. We'll take rifles to, but hope to get up close and personal.

Beach Monkey, sorry for the confusion but no worries about being a distraction. Anything moose/Alaska/caribou related is very welcome.

Incredible photos guys, too many to comment on individually, but the photos and stories are all appreciated. Thank you!

I think I'll see if Man Mountain Mike of Little Dease will post some photos up. I know several here have hunted with him and I know they take some amazing moose up his way.

Treb you wimp. Short pack, me there to quarter and help haul the load, and back out of the woods by 4:00 AM. Doesn't get much easier than that. So yes, if that has you afraid, you shouldn't chase moose. Then again, I wouldn't be doing this with Zina if we didn't have horses to help us get out of the woods......

Now, you sticking an elk and getting a clean double lung pass threw and a dead elk 60 yards later on a homemade stick and string long bow and hand made arrow with "ELK" written on it, THAT'S a trick deal. You should be proud. Write "GRIZ" on one of those arrows and head north.....

Hey Mike. 200MB each? That would be big files for sure. If you want to shoot me a couple to my email, I'll add them to my gallery and you can link and post them from there. I can downsize them if needed. I can also pull some offline if you have them posted there, just let me know.

Gun Rod Bow...I'm sure it's just coincidence on the two you first posted, but without the skull attached to Steve's, I'd have thought those were the previous year's sheds for yours...the fronts look amazingly similar. Any chance they could have been related?

I never looked at that before, but they were a few hundred miles apart, so I really doubt it.

OK I guess it requires a short story. Yes Terry (myself) and Jeff (my buddy) did the old DIY archery moose hunt this september. It all started in 2008 when a friend asked if I could help him and his father-in law find an Ochoco bull elk during archery season in trade for info and transportation for an AK archery moose hunt. Jeff and I help our friends from AK get there elk so the deal was sealed. It took a few years to make it all come together but we finally commited to going this year. Trip started by Jeff driving to fairbanks and I flew in and met him on the 7th of september. we were grounded til the 11th due to weather. On the 11th I was flown into a remote gravel bar on the slouth slope of the Brooks Range where I set up our base camp and waited for Jeff to be flown in. I've got to say, Rick ,our pilot has over 6000 hours landing on gravel bars and that was worth the trip by itself. Jeff arrived later that afternoon and we finished setting up camp and went out to glass. The area our pilot took us to did not look like an archery moose area to us but what did we know. We were camped on a gravel bar in a river bottom surrounded by Tundra and mountains that went straight up. The only cover was a five mile strech of willow bottom. Each day we would hike 2-1/2 miles up river where we would climd 500 ft out of the bottom and glass. the first 10 days we blew a dozen stalks on the same two moose. Rut was late and there was little or no rut activity happening. Twice our stalks in the 20'high willow were blown by grizzly bears ,man I wanted to shoot one of them, but without a guide its a no go for non residents. On the 12th day we finally had some new moose move into the area and low and behold a 50" bruiser with 6 points on ea. brow tine came right into my calls just like in the movies. Jeff promply arrowed the great bull at 18 yards. I've got to admit it was an incredibly emotional time for the both of us after such a emotional and physical beating we had been taking for the trip til that point. If you have never walked up on an adult bull moose laying dead you have no idea what you have just done. It took Jeff and I 2-1/2 hours to part out, cape and spread out the first moose, then we packed 5 trips a peice for 2-1/2 miles for the next three days(over 100lb.s a pack) The day after recovery I finally had an oportunity to be up and arrowed a 63-1/2" monster on the last day we had to hunt. I arrowed my bull at 43 yards approx. 4miles from camp. When our pilot saw the bull laying on the gravel bar he said congrats you dumb S.O.B. Fortunately he had a raft back in Fairbanks and I convienced him that I could float the bull down to a landable gravel bar if he'd drop the raft. The next day around noon we heard the super modified 170 coming and he flew right over us and dropped us a 13' rubber boat.We only had to pack my bull 150 yards to the river and float four miles. The float took four hours in an 18 degree snow storm but we gotter done. All in all it was truely a trip of a lifetime but I'd have to heal for a while before I'd be ready to do it again. We never saw another person, we saw three grizzly bears up close and personal, several wolfs and hundreds of Caribou. all could have been easily harvested with a rifle but we were stricltly bow hunting for moose, and the only other weapon was a 12ga. defender with 00 buck. Our pilot, an avid bow hunter himself made it very clear before the trip that he would not risk his life or plane for a rifle shot moose. The area we hunted is not an area typically hunted for moose due to the terrain and dificult access. its a small area that our pilot holds dear to himself and could easily be hunted out with a rifle so we respected his wish and chose not to even have a rifle in camp to resist the temptation although it would have been legal.

Great story Terry. I've considered a DIY moose hunt, and your story reminds me why I decided against it...

Terry

Great post now my DIY moose hunt is back on in my mind. Would that pilot do that again for a Tradional Bow hunter?

Had to ask.

This thread has me so excited. I leave in 9 days for my first ever moose hunt in Alberta. Adding whitetail to the mix as well. Hope to have worthy pics when I get back.
