Default Bank fishing for North Coast newbies ...

I am still seeking my first steelhead (although I admit I have not gotten out as much as I would have liked to over the past two years). Some friends and I plan on hitting the coast this Friday (27th) for a half-day of fishing and then some crabbing in the Nehalem bay. What are our best bets for bank fishing? We were thinking about the NF Nehalem or the Wilson, but I don't know the good bank spots. Any recommendations? I've read Madwizard's "reading holding water" primer and other posts with technique advice; now all I need is a few good locations for bankies.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

NF Nehalem, below the hatchery. Go early as this place is no secret. Lots of pressure but by then should be lots of fish.

I have only bank fished for North Coast Newbies a couple of times. Elusive creatures, I have hooked them but have yet to land one. Usually we do a combined North Coast Newbie fishing trip and North Coast Snipe hunting trip on the same day.

The place to fish depends on water conditions. Pick a river that you like. Fish there. Forever. After 5 years of fishing there, pick a second river. I'm serious. Quit chasing reports. By the time you get there, the fish are gone. Fish 1 river. Fish it well.
North coast snipe hunting has been real good in the Necanicum Bay area. Look for bunches of cover between the tourists to hold the birds.

Drifted the NF Nehalem Sunday it was low & clear :depressed: I'm off work for the next 6 days and will not be fishing the NF (my favorite river) unless the river level comes up. There were few drifters a good sign that fishing is not that good, and the word from the locals was it had been slow. Hooked & released several sore back Chinook, and cutthroat no sign of fresh steelhead. Just my .02
