New member Intro and Story
Hi all,
As a new member I wanted to introduce myself and post a fish tale as I've been informed is the custom.
First a little about myself. My name's Brent and I'm a recently transplanted Californian. Probably shouldn't admit that but I've nothing to hide. Well not much anyway. I've got my folks here as well as sisters and a brother. The fishing is also what drew me here. I grew up in Utah and fell in love with fishing when my Grandfather took me deep sea fishing when I was 5.
Enough of that on to my fish story. It happened recently as a matter of fact. I'd been trying my hand at catching salmon since late July without much success. I'd been picking people's brains as to places to go when I ran into Richard at the Beaverton GI Joes back in November. We'd just received some rain and he told me that the run of Chum salmon on the Miami river would be heating up. I managed to convince my dad that we needed to head down. As it turned out only I was able to make it that Friday. Turns out it was November 15th, the last day to go after them. I made my way down to the river and picked a spot to pay and fish. After paying my money I started to suit up. I noticed someone making their way up from the river and said hello. Turned out to be Jim the Manager of Fly Country Outfitters in Salem. We talked for a bit and he told me how he'd hooked into a Chinook and had landed 3 Chum already (it was only 11:00). I was encouraged to say the least having not even looked at the water yet. During our conversation I'd admitted to being a rank amatuer. He asked what I'd be using and I told him I'd be using some yarn patterns I'd tied on Richards suggestion. We talked a bit more, he grabbed a bite from his truck and headed back to the river. When he was about 50 yards away he called over and said that if I wanted he'd get me on some fish. Of course I jumped at the chance. I suited up as quick as I could and got down to where he said he'd be. He gave me a few pointers of where I'd want to cast my fly and how I'd need to present it. After about 15 minutes I'd hooked into my first Salmon ever(not counting kokanee). While I was fighting it Jim gave me instructions on how to fight him since I'd not caught anything this big on a fly rod before. I fought him for about 10 minutes and landed him. Jim just so happened to have his camera on him and took a photo of me and my Chum before I released him. Jim said he'd probably run about 10 pounds. I was a little winded from sloshing back and forth and coming down from the rush of adrenaline. I shook Jim's hand and fished with him the rest of the day. All told I hooked into about 15 landing 6. An amazing day that only served to whet my appetite for more.
I guess that's about it for now. Glad to be a member. I've already learned a bunch from this site about my next target. A steelhead! I know I've got tons to learn but I hope this board will help with my learning curve.
Cheers,
Brent
