3rd largest ever today! (warning: brag post)
 BRAG POST!!! - 17.5 lbs of finclipped steelhead on the Wilson today!
Largest finclipped fish I have EVER gotton on the Wilson, or any coastal river for that matter. I got a larger clipped summer fish last year, and one a bit over 18 on the clackamas 2 years ago, but never anything so big on the Wilson. I'm pumped.
Questions for the panel:
1) Fish had adipose and dorsal fin clips. I have never seen a dorsal clip before, anyone know what this means?
2) fish had a bit of color (see picture) and I would have thought maybe freshwater for a couple weeks, but it still had sealice with tails attached? Seemed strange.
3) Would this be a slime rocket... or a SLIME HAWG!
UG
And a big thanks to the guys with the net assist if your reading this.

Nice fish you got there
Now for the color that you were asking about. Just something that I have seen is that bucks will be darker then the hens. So, is that fish a buck?
Just my 2 cents
Nice fish by the way

Way to go!
Bill says that the dorsal fin was chewed off by other steelhead smolts while still in the hatchery.
I'm going out to catch the 19.5 one tomorrow.

Re: 3rd largest ever today! (warning: brag post)
UG
Nice fish. Hopefully this is one of our returning broodstock fish. How did its ventral fins look? The ODFW had the prisoners fin clip them the first two years and very few where done right if at all. That may be why the dorsal was missing. I got one last year in Jan. that was 20.5 pounds on the Wilson and lots of 12-15 pounders returning last year. Hopefully that is just the tip of what Wilson river hatchery fish will look like in the future. Support or coast broodstock programs.

Re: 3rd largest ever today! (warning: brag post)
I fished the wilson for about 2 hours today and I caught 2, one about 6 lbs and one about 9 lbs. I was at mills drift and I was using a red spin-n-glo size 10 with white wings.
Just thought I would share the info.

Re: 3rd largest ever today! (warning: brag post)
Scott,
Other than the adipose and the dorsal, all fins were intact... I'm guessing broodstock fish as well, just was wondering if a dorsal had some meaning, or if it was an accident or is someone was an idiot and couldn't tell the top of the fish from the bottom?
Here is the Dorsal:

Nice fish UG. I've only caught 3 fish of that Caliber in my life. All Nates, all way back when (and all bucks too). All fought like they were 1/2 B52 and 1/2 F16. Wooohooo... did you woop and holler! Makes Tuna season not seem so far away now doesn't it!

Re: 3rd largest ever today! (warning: brag post)
Those are terrific fish...Heard there are some ducks down there, too...hmm...better get to the coast (Bill H....Are you hunting in your back yard yet? I don't have a thing going over here)
As for the fin, what happens in hatcheries is that so many fingerlings are swimming around they tend to nip each other's dorsals. Most deformities aren't that severe...or at least not among survivors...
Anyone release a wild bigger than that in the past week or two?

I sure hope that's a broodstock fish.
BTW, we got the program cut off last season right when things were getting going but I just got my application packet for this season in the mail a few days ago and didn't have to call for it. Apparently it is on again? Somebody twisted some arms and got the funding again I guess, good deal!!!

See what happens when you get rid of those darn rubber hooks. Nicest fish I have seen in a while. As for the dorsal I was told that sometimes when the fish are in the hatchery ponds there are so many fish that they run into each other and can injure a fin   not sure if thats it or not but its one explaination I was given.
Definitely a HAWG!! BOSS HAWG!!

By nature steelhead smolts are agressive at each other and nip each others fins off. Salmon smolts don't do this to each other that is why you never catch a hatchery salmon with dubbed off fins.

Re: 3rd largest ever today! (warning: brag post)
Nice fish.......I caught a recycled hatchery steelhead last year that was totally missing both fins as well. The dorsal was completley shaved off? That was the first and last one I ever caught clipped like that.
Caught a summer run that had a three fin clip in June. Both left and right pectoral fins, along with an adipose clip.
Some weird stuff going on out there.

Re: 3rd largest ever today! (warning: brag post)
If it were one of the mis clipped prison fish, it would have had the left vent cut...
-- or maybe not! They were pretty darn sloppy, from what I hear.
With my vision, I opted out of the fin clipping thing. I might have clipped it's head off, for all I could see at that time!

Prison fish? Did you catch it with an orange "jumpsuit" corkie? Maybe one with black and white stripes? I hear a lot of them are fond of pink pearl.
