Stocking Bass
A friend of mine has a pond that hasnt been stocked in years. They said if I paid for the fish to stock in the pond, that I could fish it any time I want. Does anyone know where I could find a place to get 400+ bass in the Salem area? And about how much this would cost?

Re: Stocking Bass
Not sure but I think you better check with ODFW. May need a permit etc. They can probably lead you to a source as well.
Of course - you could get 400 nightcrawlers and head to the freeway ponds to get those fish!

Re: Stocking Bass
Stock it with some bluegills, crappie, minnows or some other type of food fish (trout are a great food for bass) also check and see if there might be bass in it now, you would be supprised, they can get in a lot of different ways including eggs on the bottom of blue heron's feet when they wade thru spawning beds.. its inportant to make sure theres lots for them to eat or they well stunt there growth, (the size of the pond/# of bass also factors in here). Catching bass from other places then placing them in your pond is a option, its great when you mix the gene pool from place to place but it can backfire with sick bass and poor gene,s too. it you can get your hands on 1 large preditor fish aka pike, pickeral, musky, large trout, walleye etc well help weed out the sick, lame and lazy...its all in the cards...DJ

Re: Stocking Bass
If you do a search for fish hatcheries, you'll come up with some around Salem, I believe that they have bass and other fishies for sale.

Re: Stocking Bass
DJFISHS2XS is right except that i have heard to stay away from crappie. im not sure about this but i think the problem is something with them eating more food than the nutritional vale they provide as forage. besides trout as an optional food source(and probably pretty spendy) crawdads are one of the best. Bassmaster published an article a while back saying that fish high in crawdad diet grew faster than most. there are many small pond mangement tapes and books so i would look to those for help. good luck

Re: Stocking Bass
Try this one:
Jenks Hatchery
32539 Hwy 99e
Tangent, OR 97389
(541) 928-8953
I'll bet they can tell you what you need to get this going, as well as what regulations you need to know about. They've been around a long, long time.
