Portland Fisherman
I see many references in posts regarding the people coming from Portland fishing. I just wanted to say that all fisherman from Portland are not the trash dumping, fish snagging, Land Rover driving people that some make us out to be. I am a native Oregonian. Have lived lived here most of my life. Lived in New York "talk about too many people" then Florida "tourist trap". I had to come back and I will never leave again. This is home. I have travelled the entire state exploring. Hiked through all of our mountain ranges. Fished many of our rivers. Memories of many weeklong excursions exploring the beauty of our state. From caves to the top of Mt. Hood. This is one Great State!
I live in Portland because of the kind of work I do. I would love to have a place on the Clack in Estacada, cabin on the Nestucca. Unfortunately I live in a concrete jungle with people above and below me. The sound of I-405 coming in from my windows. I have thought about asking my neighbors if I could have the metal pierced in their faces so I could make a few spinners. I get out of the city whenever I can. Reading some of the posts on this board makes me feel somewhat unwelcome. Anyway, that's not going to keep me from coming to your neighborhood to do a little fishing.
Whenever I go fishing:
</font> - <font size="2" face="verdana,arial,helv">I pick up every piece of trash I find and pack it out.</font>
- <font size="2" face="verdana,arial,helv">I do not snag fish.</font>
- <font size="2" face="verdana,arial,helv">I release all natives.</font>
- <font size="2" face="verdana,arial,helv">I release all darks.</font>
- <font size="2" face="verdana,arial,helv">I spend money at the little deli in town.</font>
- <font size="2" face="verdana,arial,helv">I buy tackle at the local shop.</font>
- <font size="2" face="verdana,arial,helv">I fill my tank when I leave.</font>
- <font size="2" face="verdana,arial,helv">I take pictures so that I can always remember where I was.</font>
<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">I will agree that most of the unenlightened city fodder has no right to touch our sacred waters. Not all of us are like that.

Re: Portland Fisherman
What makes you feel unwelcome. I have never felt that way.
I like your fishing ethics am sure you will be welcome in the fishing communities and their support system.
I feel, for the most part, like an invited guest when fishing the coast.
You will too.

Re: Portland Fisherman
GL2 got me fired up with another thread. I guess I am spouting now. I have felt unwelcome at times though. You locals can spot us in a minute. Don't blame you though.

Re: Portland Fisherman
Heavy Metal,
Hell ya brother man I hear ya. Good piece of writing. I got a good laugh off your I-405 comments and I'm totally familiar with the area. Yes, I know of them pierced up partiers, fun bunch, well some.
Do not take it personal, not that you are, about being a "Portlander." Crap I used to hear of people calling me a "Valley Puke" because I lived in different places throughout the Willamette Valley. Typically it's a merry go round with the people. The Coastals get funky (no not generalizing) with the Valley people and on and on....
Give a week and it will be the folks in Vancouver that take the foul hooks.
Glad to hear your keeping my home state in good order!

Re: Portland Fisherman
I would like to say one thing however. I can understand how local people impacted by fishing feel. I would not want people roaming all over my land on their way to fish. A fence is in the back of my mind. Although I would never put one up. I can understand the thinking.
I never go on private land.

Re: Portland Fisherman
Heck, I live in Newberg (no big city for me!!), own property/house
in Pacific City, been going there since I was a gleam in my old
pappy's eye, pay taxes in Tillamook County, fished dories out of
Pacific City since I was a youngster ... and the "locals" still call
me "flatlander".
What really cracks me up is the folks that move down there from
some where else, live there for about six months and then start calling
anybody that doesn't live there "flatlander"!! Heck, most of THEM come
from the interior states and weren't even born in Oregon!!
Then there's them thar folks (like my wife) that claim to be Natives
because they moved here as teenagers so have lived in Oregon most of
thier lives!! My wife seems to think that because she moved here when
she was 12, has been married to a native Oregonian for thirty years and
spawned four little natives that she has the right to claim SHE is a
native Oregonian. I think the kids and I should bestow an honorary
title on her this year for Xmas!

Re: Portland Fisherman
As a card carrying, fifth generation, S.N.O.B (Society of Native Oregon Born), I take offense to your wifes assertion that she is a "native".
In Article 11 (2) 1.64593 of the S.N.O.B. Constitution, it clearly states that all Native Oregonians can be identified by the slight webbing, and presence of moss between their toes. We will be sending out a team as soon as possible. There is a slight chance she may have "mutated", but this is very rare indeed. Besides--she wasn't born in God's country!!!!!
Please ask her to wash her feet
The S.N.O.B. State Song:
Hidee ho, I'm from Big O...oh forget it. I forgot that it is for S.N.O.B. ears only.

Wildhawg,
As another S.N.O.B., I hear ya!
Geek,
Wow, that love handle comment creates quite a visual!! I now have a whole new respect for you and your ears!
All,
As a Grants Pass Caveman, it is probably easier for me to remember that we are a tribal and a territorial species, there fore we tend to get a bit testy when we feel we are being "invaded'. Like many things, it is in
our genes......
