Default Strangest bait for fishing??

What's the strangest bait you've ever used for fishing?
I've caught trout with huckleberrys, and a steelhead on a red blackberry . I watched a friend catch his SECOND steelhead on a dandelion--he'd told me about the first one, but I didn't believe him til I saw it for myself
Grossest bait was taught to me by an old Columbia River guide named Wayne Graf. You might remember his "Lets Play Hookie" ads in the Oregonian in the 70's and 80's. He took me under his wing, and showed me his "secret" for catching oversize sturgeon below Bonneville: Furst, net a bucketful of already putrid floater shad. Filet said shad, then place in bucket with lid, in sun, til sufficiently ripened! Choke, gag
Man, puttin' that crap on was heinous, but lemon dawn did a pretty good job removing the smell, after a few days anyway....

Grandpa used to use Beechnut magic juice on his worms. He kept his beechnut in his left cheek and his worms in the right. Right after hooking the worm, he would give it a good splatter of Beechnut juice.

Son of a gun caught more fish than anyone I have ever met.

threaded a piece of red licorice on the hook when steelhead weren't biting and promptly caught a #12 buck.
Also tried a bourbon chaser on a sardine wrap that worked (don't ask how this came to be, but it was a fun experiment from what I remember.)

Once let a six pound catfish swin around in an uncle's moonshine until he got a mean drunk going. Thru a couple of half hitches around his tail and turned him loose in a river where he'd pick a fight with anything that swam by. After the bubbles died down, I'd reel him in to release whatever he had locked in his jaws.
Hey, if you believe all of the above, you'll believe this.

In the recent Sturgeon Challenge, Mel (Miss B Haven) was getting pretty desperate for some action. First he tried squid marinated in Pete's bloody mary. That didn't work, so he used a chunk of tuna loin marinated in the same bloody mary. Didn't help much, but I think some of the ********* were pretty happy.

Swedish Fish, I could never use them for bait.

But, I fished once for sturgeon with the usual smelt or shrimp until I found a starling nest on the boat, cracked a couple of fresh eggs over the bait and HOOKED....nothing. I then found a rotten ***** (lizard) in the hold and threaded that on the hook, first cast and it barely settled to the bottom when...FISH ON...nice 43 inch keeper.

I used to think these things were pretty gross until I tried em. While looking for something to kill the boredom of a Central Washington winter, I learned about fishing whitefish from the locals. The only bait they said was maggots. YUK!!! But until you try em, don't knock em. Keep em in a 35 mm film container with bread meal and they're cleaner and drier than worms. But, I would not keep em in my cheek to keep em from freezing.

Using pickled herring for sturgeon one time, a friend's wife put the dill pickle from the middle of the jar on as a joke and caught a keeper. While baiting my hook I popped in a mouthful of the herring and thought she was gonna hurl! She never knew that the pickled herring was intended for human consumption. She just thought it was sturgeon bait!

Same women caught sturgeon on half a hot dog when nobody else was hooking up wtih the usual baits.

Slayer,
A good friend of mine from the Tri-Cities area said if you are going to use maggotts in the winter, you have to keep em in the cheeks of your mouth to keep em warm so they don't freeze.

Along the lines of this thread, what's the deal with kokanee and corn? What do they think that is?

Trout on marshmallows, Northern Pike (real pike, not *********) on bacon, Carp on bread dough flavored with strawberry jello.

An old timer told me that he worked at the mill in Orfino Id. . the mill was right at the fork where the North Fork dumps into the main river. The story is, that during his lunch break he had landed a nice Steelie on a Vienna Sausage. id.painter

Last year on the Nestucca, I couldn't keep the shand shrimp on for more than a couple of casts. Searched through the tackle box and found a plastic crawdad (from my bass gear), first cast, bobber down, nice 35 lb chinook! Have not caught anything on it since.

When I was a little kid my uncle and I were up on the Metolius. He was a fly fisherman and a real die hard. Luck was not on our side that day so we took a break. He was a smoker, finished his smoke and by habit flicked his cig butt out in the river by accident. That thing hit the water and was gulped down by a huge trout instantly. We looked at each other and just laughed. He died a few years ago but I still smile thinking of that story. Oh, that was the only bite all day.

fishsauk - that's too funny! My wife got me a little plano tackle box full of gummy woms last year as a stocking stuffer. She thought it was pretty funny and so did I. Apparently at least one person didn't think it was a joke!
Then again- maybe I should try them. Did that guy catch anything?

While in Alaska I rented a cabin on a lake out near Big Lake for a couple of years. Durring break up I would wait until the ice pulled back from the shore about 4-5 feet and would use left over pancakes under a bobber. The lake Trout would nail it every time. Those Rainbows could get really big. I tried every common method, but the pancakes worked the best.

I once seen my grandpa catch a carp on a cigar butt. I think it was still smokin when he cast it out! Back east we used to do the ole "mouse trick" for bass where you tie your line (with the hook) to a mouse and float him out into the water on a piece of wood (tied to a rope), then when the mouse floats out there a bit jerk the wood out from under him and give him some slack.... BLAM-O!!! The bass will tear um up! Have also seen bass eay baby ducks before too!

How about a springer on Fishing Eddie's eggs

Just kidding

I caught a chinook with about a five inch section of fileted off rib cage from another salmon inside it's belly.

We also caught a chinook on the Wilson this fall that had swallowed a sardine that someone had removed the filets off and tossed in the water.

I've caught steelhead with bits of hard plastic inside as well as snails.

I caught a coho in the ocean in Alaska that had a shrew in it's belly.

The cheap hot dogs make excellent catfish bait. Have caught countless fish on them.

Used to use salmonberry flowers to catch trout when I was young.

Have also seen trout nail cigarette butts off the surface....strange.

Crazy stuff!

Wild hawg This reminds me of the first steelhead my little brother caught on a 2" piece of straw fom a big gulp threaded on a 2.0 mustad hook. We were fishing Connies rock on the Salmon river back in the early 80's before John Mcclure bought the whole area and closed it down to fishing. And Wayne Graf taught me 20 years ago how to fish the Wind river, most of what I do today I learned from Wayne back in the day! Has anyone herd from him in the last few years?

FishHog,
Wayne and his wife Judy operate a tavern and restaurant in Zig Zag these days--I can't remember the name, but as of 3 years ago they were doing great. I met him on the wind in the early 80's. An old boy had just run right over a fish we had on, and cut it off with his prop. Man that steamed me, but I had clients and kept my cool. Just then, some Grizzly Bear lookin' guy hollers from outside the bubble--"hey, come over here, I wanna talk to you". I motor over, and the Griz proceeds to compliment me on my handling of the blind, deaf ol' fart. Before I knew it, I was staying with his family in Camas (had a sign on the gate--"Anus Acres" ) darn near every week!
Wayne was a great guy once you got to know him, though I think alot of folks thought he was a mean ol' SOB--just cause he looked like he could be!
Sure miss those days of limits on springers, with time to go below Bonneville and catch a Sturgeon on the way back to Waynes.

Wildhawg, thanks for the info on Wayne, I think about the old cuss often and will now make the trek to zig zag and seek him out. I met him like you in the early 80's at the wind river. Wayne had almost limited out his boat and yelled at me from a distance to anchor my peice of #%&# and get in his boat no charge. I guess he felt sorry for me, The next 4 hours were spent hooking fish and learning about pulling warts asking questions and getting beat up by the old fart. It is an experience I will never forget because he made me a better fisherman that day.

I have seen a ********* grab a duck by the leg. Duck got way though after a lot of flapping.

Trout on French Fries.

Then again the flies I tie take the ugly prize, they are probably my weirdest bait, the fish haven't much objected.

A friend and I were on the upper Clackamas many years ago (Oh Lord, I'm getting old) and he caught a beautiful Steelhead. As we were getting ready to leave, he was cleaning the fish. Inside the belly was a big lump. He cut the intestines open and found a wren inside. With that much in his belly, you wouldn't have figured him to take a spinner, but he did.

I guess that might be considered an overly large fly.

Very big catfish on the hindquarters of a gopher. Buddy used the front half and caught a smaller one that was still pretty nice.
