Default The fight against fishing spam

In my fight against spam targeted at ifish members, I have come across a repeat offender who really bugs me.
If you get an e mail from:

Mark Osterholt
Director of Marketing
Internet Concepts

Please post here, or let me know.

Thx,
Jen

I have gotten some from that source. They are on my e-mail blocked list. I'll keep an eye out for them and let you know Jennie.

I called him on the phone.
I told him that people really don't like to be spammed.
He disagreed. He said some people do.

Do you know of ANYONE who likes spam???

I told him that I have grown this site without EVER sending ONE spam... He said "have a good day."

I will.

Don't post it here. That's what he wants.
He wants the whole world to see these silly little web sites with bulletin boards that have 5 posts on them.

There is, however, a phone number at the bottom of the page.

I used it.

I'll be the bad guy. If you would like his phone number (he's in Portland), his email address, or his ICQ number then let me know and I'll email it to ya.

I hope he likes catalogs of the...uh...questionable type because he's gonna get a bunch of them.

Coming atcha, Keta.

This Mark guys is a joke. Of the four sample sites that he lists in his "portfolio", three of them are owned by him and the fourth isn't even a registered domain.

Dude is charging a minimum of $2500 for a website. He must be trying to raise money for that clue transfusion that he needs.

I do not understand the concern of people about receiving "spam". I get about 20-30 pieces of such crap a day to my e-mail addresses, and it probably takes me 15 seconds to delete it all. So what is so offensive????

What is offensive about spam is that they are wasting my time to have to download their stuff. Those folks on dialup have to take extra time to pull it in, and the wade through was is bad to find what is good.

They are worse than snail mail spam, as at least the snail mailers pay money to use the mail system. These spammers are costing the administrators of our mail servers (and, in the end, us) to have to process and distribute their spam.

There are several states (including Washington) who have passed anti-spam laws. Unfortunately there might be federal protection for their actions, but we'll see where the appeals go.

I recently read an article about a Detroit Spammer that is all upset because someone posted his home mailing address on the internet. Apparently he is receiving literally a TON of catalogues and assorted junkmail at his house daily. He has filed a lawsuit against the guy that posted his address. I thought it was funny. I am not condoning those actions, but it was humorous.

What is worse than the spam is the virus bugs that come with it! I have received multiple spams that have a virus in them. Make sure you have anti-virus protection!

Thumper,

I can handle the spam, although I feel just like the rest of the crew - it's a pain. What riled me was the way he talked to Jennie. Don't nobody talk ta Miss Jen like that. Let's see how *he* likes spam.

I'll take that address. Maybe anyone here with a business website can send it to him daily. If this guy's never heard of Joe's Guide Service in the past, he will be seeing my website in his sleep before I'm done

Doing a simple search of this guys name on Yahoo shows that sending out spam to users of forums like this appears to be a common practice of his.

One thing you don't want to do is click the "Remove me link" on obvious SPAM. While this may work for legitimate e-mail lists, it only verifies a real address. Once you reply to that e-mail you verify that it is a valid e-mail address that someone is using. You are then on a list that most likely will be sold to some other SPAMMER. Best thing to do is delete.

You guys... don't stoop down to his level.
I know it sounds fun to send him all kinds of stuff, but... lets just rise above.

He's trying to make a living the best way he knows how, and after all, it's Christmas. (And don't tell me you are just sending him a little something. )

Thumper, spam is no big... I delete it too, but it bugs me when they steal addresses to get the spam, like coming to a bb like this and collecting names. That BUGS me. I feel responsible.

I was grouchy. I'm tired of spam... I understand wanting to get back, that's why I phoned him... but... let's just let it go for now, k?

I'm having a period of generosity and kindness in this holiday season.

Hope it lasts.

Jen

Spam in a can sam I am. It reminds of getting credit card offers. When i get those I take the envelope they want you to return you app in. I seal it shut with nothing in them. They pay the postage twice. Doesn't cost them much but it gives a small amount of satifaction that they take the time to open it and there is nothing there. I figure if they take from everyone else well hey let the postman take from them.

If any of you receive unsolicited email from this clown, would you please go ahead and forward one of them to me? I'd like to see what email server he is using to send his spam, so that I can notify the server postmaster of his transgression and get him jerked from that server.

Thanks. I'll take this message down when I get one sent to me.

Cartman (BeefCAAAAAAKE!):

Instead of sending back an empty envelope, try sending back everything that they sent you that doesn't have your name or address on it. All of those wonderful pitches and such. Don't stuff it so much that it's more than a normal stamp, as against popular belief the recipient won't pay for the extra and the post office will have to destroy it, costing them money. Just send enough back (heck, send back some from another company) to make it good.

Thumper: for those of us who have a modem that is running slow, a lot of time is wasted waiting to get control of your computer back, plus the time it takes to delete it. It is a pain in the a... Also what you get once they get your address is unbelievable...pure filth.

Jen, I think that if someone brushes you off like he did then I for one (and this is not in my role of moderator) would like to encourage everyone on the bb to send this guy every piece of junk email and jokes they receive each day for a week or two. Then he will learn that it is not something we all want.

Just like the annoying phone calls at dinner time.

my .02 worth.

You can forward all SPAM to the following address, and they will take steps to shut him down. It's uce@ftc.gov Otherwise known as the federal Trade Commission.

Citing the laws in Washington state in my Signature file when posting on the usenet has worked wonders for me! I can't remember the last time I got Spammed!

Here is the text from that file, if anyone wants to include it....

ALL SPAM will be forwarded to the Federal Trade Commission! uce@ftc.gov
