Default best Salmon spinning reel?

I am looking to purchase a new spinning reel for my wife for Christmas. Starting to research options now.

It needs to be of strong sturdy construction, no plastic handles or reel seats, Drags needs to be tough enough to handle large nooks and loco Coho. Smooth ball bearing retrieve. We use braid only, usually #65 power pro or the equivalent.

I've been eyeballing the Tica line but I am not familiar with the reels. I love Okuma!

Matt

Shimano Stella 4000. You could even go 3000 with braid.

You already said you love Okuma. So do I, and a lot of others. Why stray? I bet they have one that fits your needs.

your right. I will probably end up going that route. I'm just curious as to what the favorites are. I'd like to find a pink one ... she'd love that.

I like the Shimano Stradic 4000F CI4. It hold almost 150 yards of 50-pound Power Pro and has a super strong drag.

I like most of Okuma's stuff but i am not in love with their spinning Reels. They seem to wear out and become a little less than smooth after time. for a higher end Reel maybe look at the Shimano Stradic.

The new Okuma Cedros saltwater spinning reels are good salmon reels. If you have to have a spinning reel.

Stay away from the okuma AV series, unless you want to replace them every year. Go with at least a 4000 series reel for chinook, I have had good luck with sedona and saharas by shimano and my newest a pfluegar supreme xt 9240 is the smoothest spinning reel I have ever owned.

If u like Okuma they have a new spinning reel coming out called RawII.
That reel has a ton of drag, super smooth, and is saltwater rated I think.

The Stella's have that certain sex appeal to them, but are spendy!

+1. The stellas are sure nice as well but big time overkill for salmon and hard to justify the price tag unless you also plan to use them for tuna.

There isn't one made that is better than the worst level wind you can buy. Here's my advise, buy a quality level wind and learn how to use it. You'll never look back.

I have a pflueger president xt in my salmon arsenal. Smooth and never had a problem with it. Drag is plenty powerful. Might not be what your looking for but thought I would throw in my .02

I have a pfleugar pres and a quantum incyte for king spin fishing. They work great for puget sound kings and chum for my friends and wife.
The incyte has a pink vented spool.

My wife doesn't dig the levelwinds either.

level winds have a spot in my arsenel. But where we cast for nooks and silvers in one trip we could easily make 1500 casts before we limit.

Non stop casting and retrieving is best with a good quality spinning reel. But that arguement is best for a different thread ...

I am thinking mid price range ... around 60-100.00 USD.

For 100 bucks you could pick up a shimano symmetry(sp?) 4000 and that would be plenty enough reel to handle any salmon you hook into. One could even step down to the sahara model and save 20 bucks, and still have what I consider a stellar reel. stellas and stradic are exceptional reels, but these give you some other options depending on what kind of
money you're trying to throw at a new reel. just my

Matt, I'm thinking the same thing as you. Fall Chinook in rivers, casting lures from shore into the wind, hooking a bigger than norm fish, etc. I'm going to buy another Sadona 4000 to replace my warn out one. Then I'm looking into the new for 2012 Fin-Nor Inshore IFS 4000 as soon as I can find them for sale. I live on the coast so I like the specs, and salt water resistant aps to this reel. I think it is right at $100.00. If anyone else knows where to get this reel right now please let me know. The Sedona is a great reel for $ 60.00, wish they still came with an xtras pool.

In that price range shimano symetre is probably the way to go.

I caught well over 200 chinook, coho, and steelhead on my sedona. The drag was still going strong, but I killed the bail return spring after 3 years or so.

Pretty bold statement there... The shimano Stella for instance will out preform any levelwind that I have ever seen anyone use for salmon hands down. I'm not saying that it would be with dropping 700 bucks on one if all you want to do is salmon fish with it but they make all the standard models of NW casting/levelwind reels seem like toys.

If youre lookin to keep the price under $100 I'd suggest a Penn Sargus, its also saltwater friendly, comes in several sizes (mine is the 4000 size), and it will last forever because its a Penn.

Shimano Symetre, Saros or Stradic - any of the three in the 3000 size.
