The Power Squadron is supposed to have a class on GPS open to the public this year. Contact your local power squadron and bug them about it. The more demand they see, the quicker it will get done!

The answers you seek are in the book of Ifish, chapter of 'Salty Dogs'.

These posts are a year or two old but you can learn enough to ask good questions.

Check out the website of West Marine, and go to their "Advisors" section - it will tell you alot of info about GPS, including what to look for. Also, GI Joe's has seminars about GPS, and some Community Colleges have "adult education" sessions. I have a handheld Garmin 12 XL which has served my well (although it is a replacement for one that went gunny-bag). A friend has a Garmin (II ?)that has displays a map, of sorts, showing if the next waypoint is to the right, left, etc. - this would be very handy going up a foggy river, etc. My son has an inexpensive Magellan which I find hard to read (thin-line letters & numbers) and few waypoint/routes.

Default GPS

I am ignorant when it comes to GPS. Does anyone know of a good link that explains the technology somewhat? Need some background on what to look for when purchasing one. Thinking of a hand held and then use a RAM mount for the boat. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
