Re: corkie color?
For sure pink is a go to color but it all really depends on the water color. I would stick to a few or half dozen colors, one or two for each water condition (i.e. clear, steelie green, pea soup, muddy)

Re: corkie color?
I'm always searching for that odd ball color that I think less than half the population on the river is throwing this season. Like DJ said, choose your colors according to the days conditions. Here is a few I carry in my arsenal.
1) Name: Parrot
2) Color: Blue/White
3) Color: Silver (not chrome but silver)
4) Name: Patriot
5) Name: Mistletoe
6) Name: Browntrout

I like pink if the water is clearish, moving to orange and then chartreuese as the water gets cloudier.

Re: corkie color?
Once in a while I go to a busy popular fishing hole when it's crowded and just observe what's getting caught on what. What I've observed is that steelhead and salmon are caught on virtually all color and size of corkies, so if the majority is using a certain color, I just switch to something vastly different. Last week, when Bi-mart had 15 for $1 sale, I spent $30 and got ten of every single color they had in stock.
Don't be afraid to offer them some variety, after all the variety is the spice in life.

Re: corkie color?
When a buddy of mine taught me how to catch steelhead a few years back, he carried only one "Float" in his box and used it only when water was "less than clear". It was the Flame Red okie. Seemed to catch lots of fish. Cannot find them anymore so I stick with the flame orange corkie but only use it when water has color. When it's clear ..or close I use eggs with a borax cure with no float. Works for me......

Jennie, a few of you (Hog and Skrimmy included) seem to be doing well in the Tualatin lately. That might be a place for ifishers to get together and hold a clinic for the new guys. It could be a real party.

Re: corkie color?
No doubt pink is an excellent color. I have caught alot of steelies on orange scale and peach and red also. Red corkie/green yarn is a favorite standby. When water is clear and sun is shining, chrome colors work excellent. When water is low vis, I have done great with luminescent (glow) corkies, such as cerise spot.

Spare Link,
Looks like you have some great choices ahead of you. Keep a wise eye to what Ultra Brite mentioned. Change it up!
The sheep like to use the same thing for the most part. I've said this before that if your the steelhead moving through a buffet of offerings what would you hit. The 20 plate loads of meat loaf, or the one platter of lasagna. (you get the point)
chartreuse with orange spots...........

Re: corkie color?
Kind of like that domino's pizza comercial...
What is the hot color today...Pink
And what is the hot color tomorrow...Pink
And what is the hot color the day after... Pink
I see a pattern, but confidence is the key. Find 3 or 4 colors that work and stick with those in different sizes.
Personally it is Pink Pearl, Orange and a few variations of Green and Black.

Re: corkie color?
Don't use corkies much - only some old okies I've had since the 60's. I've heard that corkies work pretty well though. Anyone have any extra okies you want to get rid of?

Re: corkie color?
Question about Oakies. If they were such a awesome steelie catcher why would Luhr Jensen discontinue them twentysome years ago? I saw a 100 count bag of them at a sidewalk sale in Alsea. (chrome)

Steve
For the same reason they quit making Birdie Drifters, there was no profit in making them anymore. That is from Buzz himself!! I have about 800 rainbow and pink birdie drifters and i feel that they will out fish corkies by a long shot. By the way Buzz still uses a double oakie setup at the Dam Hole and does real well

Re: corkie color?
Speaking of Buzz. I saw him put on a clinic using birdies for Chinooks at the Dam Hole many years ago. He was nailing nearly every fish in the area while everyone else caught nothing. He had the spot and the technique. I think that guy can catch fish in a mud puddle.

After losing all my favorites, I went Haloween one day, and wham-nice hatchery hen within the first 3-4 casts. Orange cream sicle corkie with black yarn. Haven't tried it since though, since I always restock the box with my favorites.

Re: corkie color?
I switched, almost exclusively, to Luminous Rocket Red last year and found that it worked consistently well. I usually buy up all that are available locally.
The pearly white/pink color (actually called pearl red) seems to be a good one as well. I also have used the Pink Purple in the past, but I can't find them anymore.
Here is a link to Yakima's Corky colors for those that are interested:

Re: corkie color?
I've used pink and peach colors with various finishes, but I always seem to catch my fish on watermelon. If I'm only running one corkie, I'll use yarn. If I double up corkies, I go without yarn.

My favorite by far is pink pearl. However sometimes Im really tired of Pearl and think it is not working, then I will cover all my bases and throw out a rainbow.
